Is it pure luck or is Timing everything?

Just witnessed yesterday (Sunday afternoon Oct 13)
something I have not seen before -- Jackpots after
jackpots on the same group of machines (Super Aces) at
Pala Casino (San Diego area).
We've been playing these $1 machines for about 4-6
hours. Around 3pm, these couple I was talking to said
"About a month ago or so, both of them hit the RF
Progressive Jackpot on these machines around 3-3:30pm
so this could happen again since the jackpot is over
$7,200 already.". Right after saying that, the couple
left to get a quick bite to eat. With that I told
myself "Why not try again? I've already hit the 4
Aces three times that day anyway.". So I picked one
of the corner machines. Around 3:20pm, the guy next to
me yelled "Hey, it dealt it to me 4 Fours for $400.".
I said "Good for you!". After he got the Handpay for
$400, he pressed play again and boom -- a louder
yelling "I did it. I did it. It dealt it to me!". Yes,
that $7,200+ RF Jackpot was dealt to him. Then about 2
minutes later, the machine on the opposite side of him
started yelling also "It dealt it to me too! ". Yes,
another dealt Royal Flush. Then almost at the same
time, 2 machines down hit the 4 Aces for $2,000+
(Progressive also). And me :frowning: --- the machine I picked
gave me 4 Kings for $250. (I could have picked the
2nd machine where the couple I was talking to was
playing.) I had to go to the Coffee Shop to tell that
couple that they left a little too early and that they
got me thinking about that 3pm thingy. Oh well, taking
home over $1,500 is not bad after all.

Anyway, I know we'll all say it's pure luck!
But, here's a question for you, masters and experts:

Can these machines be programmed to pay the jackpots
just on certain hours?

Thanks!
Gilbert

You can program a machine to do just about anything, but why would you program it to pay at certain times ?

Oops! sorry I made a mistake for my question. As a
software engineer/tester/programmer, I should know the
machines can be programmed to pay at certain times.
The question I should have asked is something like:

"If they really wanted to, can casinos program some
machines to pay jackpots at certain time? If so,
mainly for what reason(s)?".

Coincidentally, there was a special promotion going on
at 5pm (Free dinner, free gifts, etc.) and the casino
was getting very crowded starting around 3pm. So when
the jackpots (Royal Flushes, 4 Aces) were getting hit,
I just couldn't help myself to go into the "wondering"
land. Competition is getting tight, Harrahs Rincon is
throwing all sorts of promotions same as Pechanga.
The next time I see those couple who told me about
them hitting the jackpots around 3pm (Sunday
afternoon), I'll ask them if they remember anything
about any promo going on that day. If they say "yes",
guess what I'll do next time there's a promo going on?

It is unlikely that they would gaff the machines for the following reasons...
1. It is risky, if caught bye bye license .
2. They can change their take by reducing the paytables, let's face it the majority of players can't tell the difference between a good machine and a bad one, and most that can tell the difference will play anyway.
3. It would be hard to go around changing the program to turn on specific time frames to payoff. People would eventually get suspicious if the techies came around and opened the machines and the payoffs stopped.

I received your post on the 14th, and have not gotten it again today.

Occasionally Emails to me get hung up somewhere in the system for a few
hours or longer. Perhaps this happened to you on this post, and you're
just now receiving (for the first time) your post of the 14th ?

Best wishes,
