I am reminded frequently of a story I read a long time ago. A young boy is
instructed by his older sister that when he wants to say something, he
should stop and consider the "interest quotient" of what he is about to
say. If it isn't at least a 7 on a scale of 10, he should keep quiet.
"Self-censorship" or just good judgment?

I concur - but it's really an unworkable solution as you'll never get everyone to agree on degrees of "interesting" & where they fall on the scale.
