With all this talk about GA and other 12 Step programs an interesting and
funny true story comes to mind. In the late 90's in Los Angeles a rock star
joined AA to get sober. At the same time the FBI was investigating him for drug
sales. FBI agents were following him to meetings and everywhere else. He was
finally indicted along with several others and had to appear in federal court.
The federal judge was amazed that the normally empty courtroom was packed
with people, all the guys friends from AA. [this was never known to the general
public or the press] The judge asked him, "Who are all these people?" His AA
sponsor [program advisor] stood up and said, "My name is Larry and I'm an
alcoholic."
