2a. Re: Is Getting A Marker Ever A Good Idea?
Date: Mon Mar 10, 2008 5:48 pm ((PDT))Getting the marker is never a bad idea. The same can't be said about
how the maker is used. For example, using a marker to play above your
bankroll is rarely a good idea and using a market to play enough to
wipe out your roll is never a good idea.
Those concerned about (1) overplaying their bankroll AND (2) carrying lots of cash have an option - do not get a line of credit, but deposit your cash on arrival and draw markers against it to play. If carrying the cash to / from the casino is also a concern, a check can sometimes be used, but if it's not a cashier's check, I imagine a line of credit will be needed to back it up, and then concern #1 is back in play.
Of course, by depositing cash and drawing markers, all you are really accomplishing is keeping the cash out of your pocket, where it is at risk for theft / loss -- I don't think actually drawing the marker gets you anything in the way of comps, etc. There was a time when having a large line of credit and drawing large markers, but not putting them fully into play, could generate an illusion of "big play" from the casino's perspective, but with play tracking now, I can't imagine a single casino that will be fooled for a second by that maneuver (and I don't think they were fooled for long even when this was occasionally done).
