IRS mistaken W2 problem

The first thing your friend needs to do is to contact the casino, explain
the problem, and ask for them to immediately forward a copy of the W2G to him.
The casino should have had whoever won the money show proper ID and sign.
After all, anyone could just pick up a randomly forgotten card and put it in a
machine to play - which is why they always ask for ID for jackpots.

It is possible that your friend may have forgotten he won this jackpot.
Seeing the W2G and signature will let him know if this is the case. Perhaps he
failed to write it down.

Good advice -- does anyone else "forget" about $20K jackpots? I guess I can conceive how someone might forget one that's a couple of years before, esp. if they play a lot at that level and are fortunate enough to hit them often -- but as a customary $1/$2 player and only occasional $5 player, I remember almost every $20K I've ever had!

All I can say about this is the player who is getting ask to pay the
taxes wasn't in the casino when the jackpot was hit. There is no
mistake. He didn't sign for it or receive the money.

The casino's in Atlantic City dont always ask for ID. I hit a jackpot once at Trump Plaza, and they just pulled out my card, said Are you Ned? and gave me the money and tax form. Someone who's careless could really get burned like this.
