Iowa Tax Treatment Question

That's interesting. Deb earned $5,500 in an Iowa blackjack tournament
recently and they didn't withhold anything, even though she's obviously an
out-of-state resident.

Yes, there is a mandatory 5% withholding for IA state taxes.

I think I saw your trip report about that BJ tourney - in Tama, correct? I forgot to mention in my original reply that Indian casinos are exempt from the mandatory withholding at the time of the win. However, one would still be liable to pay Iowa state taxes even if tax was not withheld initially.

And to clarify, both residents and non-residents have to pay.
