I wonder if anyone has thought of some strategy more appropriate for
the intermediate term. This would apply for a visitor who goes to
Las Vegas, say, for a week and spends tend hours a day playing Video
Poker. These birds, by the way, exist; what is the best strategy to
maximize their profits on VP? I hope I get an answer here more
creative than what I would normally get, which is the
preposterous, "This person should go to the smokiest casino that
has FPDW, forget about his lungs, and play until two hours before
his/her plane takes off at McCarran."
First off, while I thoroughly enjoy playing a hit-and-run style, the
so-called 'advantage players' do not "like" playing the way they say
they do one bit. It's much more an addict following his or her
compulsion to sit long, unhealthy hours in a seat that slowly but
surely turns into a Chair of Depression. Over & over again. The same
old thing repeated ad nauseum. After all, how would you feel sitting
there unable to leave - all the while knowing there's some
intelligent human being enjoying a healthy lifestyle 300 miles away
in Arizona?
But more to the point: Your question here is asked of me many, many
times by those visitors who come to town to play, they have no way
out of the schedule they're on because of flights, and they do want
to play the game. The first rule is that if you hit a royal early on,
you JUST DON'T PLAY ANYMORE. Why? Because unless you hit one or two
more on your trip, you overwhelmingly will go home a loser. How many
times have we seen some poor soul post on vpfree or elsewhere that
they hit a RF their first of 5 or 6 days, they hit another a few days
later, yet they went home in the hole $600? Jean Scott may condone
this type of nonsense because she advises to play for as many points
as you can. That's why her success is tied to her well-prepared
marketing ability. Bob Dancer will condone this type of foolishness
because he advises never to stop no matter what, and the person with
the lowest loss % by the time they step into the grave wins!
More realistically, however, is the player who does not hit a RF
during a visit. I advise to play a comfortable progression on BP, or
play some BP and some DDB or TBP+ for added enjoyment during that
progression. Set small win goals and start at the lowest denomination
again. Similarly, set a loss goal, and try to have a bankroll that
consists of at least 3 times 400 credits of the highest denomination
you intend to play. Move around as you feel the need to. Take a lot
of breaks for walking, meals, movies, rest, or just sit by one of the
casino ATM's for the most pathetic but entertaining show of your
life. Do what YOU want to do, and don't be chasing some stupid
rope 'em in promotion like our friend Dick here does--or the others
he idolizes do when they have the funds. Do all this and you not only
will enjoy your time there much more--you'll find more money in your
pocket when you return home.
