I forget on which list I posted on this subject - but I was given some wrong
information by casino executives - think of that!!!!!!! They said that IN
state taxes on W2G jackpots won before IN started taking out this tax was
"voluntary" and many non-residents were ignoring these bills they got from
the IN Dept. of Revenue. I just heard from a friend who works as an auditor
in this department:
"The people who got those notices about their boat winnings DO have to
submit returns and pay the tax due if any after withholding. The Caesars
executive was correct in saying that Indiana had sent out notices and was
happy when taxpayers voluntarily complied and paid their tax liability.
However, at the end of the official letter campaign, those taxpayers who
did not comply, will be billed and if they still fail to comply, their
Federal Tax refunds may be diverted to pay this tax bill as part of the
federal offset program, WITH ADDITIONAL PENALTIES, INTEREST AND COLLECTION
FEES ADDED.
Since the winners that don't respond have not filed a tax return with
the state of Indiana, there is no statute of limitations and the state can
continue to pursue the debt as long as necessary."
Hey, I don't make the rules - I'm just reporting here!!!!!
