In Praise of Reno

Hey turistas ...Tired of Vegas? Check out the article praising Reno in
the October issue of Esquire. We haven't been there for quite a while,
but the Restless Guy essay (with its pictures of "the best breakfast in
America" and the "Awful Awful Burger"), coupled with a review of the
VPfree data base has convinced us it's time to return.

Give me Reno anytime over LV, the shows are smaller, but I get the casino experience without the mobs of people!!!

casino experience without the mobs of people!!!

It all depends where you play.

I have praised Atlantis in the past for its excellent VP selection.

But on the weekend it is defifnitely crowded in there. You'll squeeze
past many players getting to your favorite machine. And the wait for
the buffet (probably the best in town) is at least an hour unless you
get a line pass from the slot club. Well worth the wait, though.

If you take up a Harrahs offer for free nights be aware that parts of
downtown Reno can be on the seedy side. And I do mean seedier than
anything you've experienced anywhere close to Fremont Street.

The last 2 issues of Skip's VPP magazine feature some really good Reno articles.

The Awful Awful is good, but the mountain of curly fries that come with
it leave alot to be desired. Luckily the burger is big enough you
don't need the fries. Order at the counter then try to find a seat.
This place is a greasy spoon's greasy spoon.

Which place is the "best breakfast in America."

According to the Restless Guy in Esquire, the breakfast in
question, "served in a skillet the diameter of a small umbrella" can be
found at Peg's Glorified ham & Eggs at 420 South Sierra St.

The last dozen times I had an Awful Awful, I didn't get curly fries, I got regular fries and they were great. I'm going in November and that'll be my first stop when I get off the plane. Breakfasts are cheap and filling too, and I have nothing to complain about there. I've had much worse food cooked by my mother in-law. (please don't tell her! heh.)
I like Mel's Diner at the Sands Regency, too. But it's not much of a greasy spoon.

I'll check out Peg's, though. Maybe I'll have a new favorite, thanks for the tip!

In my opinion, another place in Reno to get a good hamburger for not too much money is
the snack bar at the Cal Neva on the main level. It has a kind of "retro" look from the 50's,
with a counter and bar stools. Certainly nothing fancy but I've always been pleased with
their burgers, done up from scratch. They serve a few other snacks besides burgers too.

Reno actually has one IN-N-OUT Burger at 8215 South Virginia ( about 1m south of Atlantis ). You cant go wrong with a double-double /fries/shake there !

Sparks also has an In-n-out Burger within walking distance of the Nugget.
