Impact of Strategy on EV; A Question

Hi 5-card,

Great site you have with those paytables, thanks! I've seen them
before, but it's nice to meet you here on VPFree.

There's no dispute that some EV is being given up by not making
adjustments for the progressive; however, maximizing EV on a
progressive isn't the best choice for every player.

To take that a little further, playing the machine with the highest
EV in the casino may not be a good choice for an individual either,
for a variety of reasons.

Short term volatility and risk of ruin are also big considerations.
For this reason you won't likely find me at a 6/5 JOB progressive as
in your example - YUCK

If someone has a sufficient bankroll to chase progressives that's
one thing. In our case, we do sometimes chase progressives on
Quarter machines, and sit there all day/night until it hits. I
think the most we've ever lost doing this is about $500, and we've
hit some very nice $1600 to $1900+ jackpots.

On the other hand, we don't have the bankroll to attack the dollar
progressives in that way. We do play dollars from time to time, and
prefer to play positive machines. Often that means we'll be playing
a progressive, so we need a strategy to do that.

By playing the standard FP strategy on a Dollar progressive (at
6000+ coins) we have the following benefits:
1. It's a 100%+ machine
2. We can more easily and accurately budget for the session
3. We get maximum play time (and slot club points, cashback, etc.)

The cost of that play is about 0.1 of EV -- 100.55% vs. 100.65% at
6000 coins. For us that's a good tradeoff, especially where it's
the only positive machine in the place. Others may find this fits
their situations as well.

Mac,

With the progressive at 6000 coins you give up 0.12% using full

pay

strategy. I agree that for an occasional player it is not worth

learning all

the strategy changes for some progressives. Full pay strategy on

some

progressives can be very expensive.

Consider this.

Playing 6/5 JB progressive at reset using 9/6 JB (4000 coin)

strategy you

give up only 0.01%.

Playing this progressive when it reaches102% using 9/6 JB (4000

coin)

strategy you give up 1.31%.

I have the cost of using full pay strategy on some progressive's

listed
