IGT Video Blackjack

Does anyone know how to figure out the Negative expectation for the
Video Blackjack that is offered on many IGT VP MG machines
-Stand Soft 17
-No Split
-No Double
-No Surrender
-If you draw 4 cards(have 6 total in your hand) and haven't busted you
automatically win

On my MGMD GameKing, the following game percents are available for BJ:

99.5, 98.3, 95.7, 93.2 not sure which one matches your specification.

maclarenv12,

What does a BJ pay?

I spent a few minutes looking at the IGT website
(https://www.igt.com/GamingGroup/Games/game_detail.asp?
pid=5&type_id=3032) and could not find an exact match to the game
rules you specified. The few I checked did allow surrender and/or
doubling down, and the dealer hit on soft 17.

However, assuming the rules you gave are accurate, we can estimate
the Basic Strategy expectation as follows:

1. 1D, S17: +0.033%
2. No DD: -1.592%
3. SPA0: -0.164%
4. SPL0: -0.211%
5. 6-card: +0.1 %

Total: -1.834% (a truly awful game for BJ), or to put it into
Video Poker terminology, the EV is 100%-1.834% = 98.166%. As you can
see, the "No Double Down" rule is quite painful.

That's assuming BJ pays 3:2 (or 5 FOR 2, as the machines would say).

By the way, the values for numbers 1-4 above are from Don
Schlesinger's Blackjack Attack 3, Table C1, pages 492-3, while the
value for number 5 is given in Stanford Wong's Basic Blackjack, page
96. Wong also provides the necessary changes to Basic Strategy for
the 6-card automatic winner in Table 27, page 111. Neglecting Splits
and DD, these changes are as follows:

Play all Two-Card and Three-Card Hands normally.

With Four Cards in your Hand, Hit these hands: Soft-19 (S19) vs. X
("X" is any 10-value card); S18 vs. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8; Hard-13
(H13) vs. 2, and H12 vs. 4, 5, and 6.

With Five Cards in your Hand, Hit ANY Soft hand, even S21 (since you
cannot bust, and with 6 cards you'll automatically win); H17 vs. 8,
9, X, and A; H16 vs. 2 and 3; H15, H14, and H13 vs. 2-6; and H12 vs.
4-6.

Now if BJ's pay OTHER than 3:2, the B.S. expectation changes.

If BJ's pay 3:1 (4 FOR 1), add 6.974% to the expectation to get
+5.140% (or 105.140%, in VP terms), and immediately email the
location to me!

If BJ's pay 2:1 (3 FOR 1), add 2.325% to get +0.491% (100.491% in VP
terms) and email me as well!

Finally, if BJ's pay only even money (1:1 or 2 FOR 1), then subtract
2.325% to get -4.159% (95.841%, in VP terms), and immediately STOP
PLAYING THE MACHINE!

Check on the exact rules and get back to me if you're still thinking
of playing.

Hope this helps!

The Wizard of Odds has a nice Basic Strategy calculator. However,
the 6-card automatic winner isn't one of the rule options.

He has a table of rules variations and their value, too. In that list
he shows the 6-card automatic win rule as +0.16%. But all the rules
in that table are for an 8-deck game, and the 6-card rule is
obviously more valuable in 8-decks than in 1-deck.

As previously mentioned, Wong gives a value of +0.1%. So does Peter
Griffin in "Theory of Blackjack". Griffin's figure is specific to 1-
deck, but it's not clear whether he has lopped off a few hundredths
in rounding.
