If you don't like second-hand smoke, Borgata doesn't want your business

Private email to Administrator:

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi Everyone-

I got a call from an old friend this morning. She felt like coming
to AC, and we decided to meet at the Borgata. We had a nice comped
lunch in the buffetand then went out to play.
Soon after we sat down, a couple sat next to me, both with lit
cigarettes in hand. I immediately took out my fan. The woman, sitting to
my immediate right, said "Is that a fan?" and I said "yes.". When a seat
on the end opened up, at a machine my friend likes, she moved to it. I
moved over to her seat to get further from the smoke. I tried a few
other machines as they opened up, but couldn't hit. When the man in this
couple got up, vacating the machine to my friend's left, I moved to sit
next to her. I hadn't seen her in a few years, and wanted to chat with
her as we played. I took my fan with me. The female smoker was to my
immediate left.
I will add her, that normally I would have just gotten up and left
that bank of machines, but my friend wanted to play that one machine
and I wanted to sit with her.
We played for several hours, and I lost about $200. As we were
getting ready to leave anyway, a young (late 20s, early 30s) male
manager came up to me. "Is that fan for smoke?" he said, and I said
yes.
He then went on to say that smoking is allowed in the area and I
shouldn't use the fan. I said I am not asking the woman not to smoke,
but using the fan so she doesn't force me to smoke too. I didn't see any
signs saying "no fans." I told him the Borgata' "non-smoking" area is a
complete joke, and smells worse than the regular floor. He said the
employees enforce the no-smoking rule. I said that's news to me, because
in 2 1/2 years of playing there, I've seen an employee enforce it only
once or twice. My friend backed me up, saying the no-smoking signs
there aren't enforced.
He continued to say that smoking is allowed and I shouldn't use my
fan. I said "Let's see if you still feel the same way 20 years from now,
when you have lung cancer from breathing this shit 40 hours a week.
Non-smoking casino workers have gotten lung cancer you know." He
said he knows. I said my mother died of lung cancer last year and I am
only trying to protect myself.
He again said I shouldn't use the fan.
I then pointed the fan towards myself and said, "OK it's for hot
flashes. Have a nice evening." He didn't buy it.
"Are you telling me the Borgata doesn't want my business?" I
asked.
He wouldn't go that far, but said I should play in the non-smoking
area. I reiterated that the "non smoking" area is a joke.
We were getting to leave anyway, so I told him that next time I'll
go to Trump Plaza where they have a real no-smoking area and
appreciate my play.
He walked away, knowing he wasn't getting anywhere with me. We
left soon after that.
Well, that's the story. In addition to being really cheap with
comps and cashback, the Borgata apparently has no regard for the health
and comfort of its customers. I'll stop in to pick up the cashback I've
earned and maybe use some comps, but they've seen the last of me.

Whoever wrote this letter handled the situation very well.

The smoker made a complaint, and this guy was handling it in his own
way. I can't imagine there's no stated casino policy on this issue.

I would suggest that this person, as well as anyone else who feels
they've experienced out of line casino behavior (certainly the
Laughlin cage "Did you cheat" supervisor qualifies easily) speak to
the casino's gm, and/or at least get the name and email address of
that person and recount your experience.

An emailed letter to the local newspaper(s), especially in the case
of a controversial issue such as second hand smoke, has a good chance
of being published, and could help the cause.

Clearly you don't like smoking. Wouldn't it be
more productive to go to the non-smoking section
and demand it stay smoke free? If it's a joke
it's because patrons don't demand enforecement.
It seems this approach would provide the most
benefit for the most people and releive hurt
feelings all around.

I've had problem's in their no smoking section. People walk through with lit cigarettes and cigar's all the time, and I almost never hear a security person tell them to stop.
One man I know whose wife has asthma said a woman was smoking there and refused to put it out. He called a manager, who said it wasn't his job to enforce the policy, if he went to a casino he should expect to smell smoke. The man never went to the Borgota again.

have had a major problem. each time i needed
assistance, it was taken care of right away.. u are
right that smokers walk through many times, but thats
all they do, just walk. this i can deal with...if i

The posting below is just appalling. Non-smokers really shouldn't
have to put up with this nonsense. At the very least decent large non-
smoking rooms or areas should be readily available, with a large
selection of video poker.

I am in the process of setting up an email campaign to lobby for non-
smoking areas at the casinos with good video poker. I am doing this
on the site "Casino Comps", but, would be more than willing to
coordinate this effort with vpfree if the administrator agrees.

A small, but vocal group can make their feelings felt, let's give it
a try, for our lungs sake.

I haven't read the posting FAQ in a while, and maybe I should do so once again.
These (perceived)OT posts on the issues of smoking should find a better venue
than a group dedicated to vp. I'm an advocate for everyone's rights, smokers and
non-smokers alike. IMO, There are other venues available to voice your opinions
on the matter.

It appears there is (was) already a Yahoo group interested in this:

"nonsmokingcasinos · Non smoking casino players"

If anyone was in this group, you may be able to help out Thymos_one by
