Hypothetical casino smoking ban (XVP)...

Smoking is costly too for a poker player these days. If you get up
after looking at your third position hand and skip a lap, about twenty
minutes, and you are a winning player you are cutting your hourly rate
by 33%. I took to jumping up after looking at the fifth position hand,
skipping the fourth and third positon hands, but making it back to the
table for the big blind. I play less than 5% of the hands in those
spots, but still, it costs money. No-limit is not so costly as Limit
as the blinds are smaller in relation.

Yep, I'm just gonna have to face the music. Something has to go.

I'm not completely convinced that this argument is very strong -- you could say
the same thing about a few minutes, an hour, or an entire night of missed play
(VP or poker or whatever) due to going to the bathroom, eating, or sleeping.
Sure, smoking is a "choice" - continue playing, or take a break and smoke -- but
so are ALL the things we choose to do instead of gambling when we choose to do
them.

I'm also someone who makes these choices, and deciding to take a break from the
machine or from the table is a decision we all eventually face, for whatever
reason. How much do you feel like you need to have a cigarette / a sandwich / a
trip to the bathroom / a nap?

Perhaps some, in the long run, are not easy choices - eventually, we probably
had better go eat or sleep (I've heard stories about those who have NOT chosen
to leave their seat when they went to the bathroom, but that was so disgusting,
I don't want to get into it). There are other things we leave the game to do,
that we probably could skip if we really wanted to.

My wife always says, life is about choices. These are all just choices.
