How to find out?

I go to a local IRS office and ask for a summary of all my reportable income because one year I misplaced some W2-G’s and it was a big hassle- had to file an amended return. The only problem is the casinos are not required to submit them until early August so I usually file an extension.

I noted in a post last August that you can also request a “Wage and Income Transcript”, which will detail all tax related documents on file with the IRS.

As Sylvia notes, casinos have until July to provide documents to the IRS, so this is best handled through filing an extension in April, and then requesting the transcript in mid-August.

Formerly, the transcript could only be requested in person at a field office, or via phone call. There was no means to request it online. However, I now see that you can obtain an immediate download of the transcript from the IRS website.

I only see an option to get transcripts of past tax returns. Can you help me out with a link to the page that lets me request tax documents for the previous year, for which I haven’t yet filed?

Sure, go to www.irs.gov. Under the “Tools” heading, click on “Get a Transcript of your Tax Records”. On the next screen, you will see buttons to generate reports online or by mail. Document information such as W-2G, wage statements, mortgage interest reported by your financial instittution, etc is only available through the online “Wage and Income Transcript” option.

Click on the “online” button and you’ll receive further prompting to identify yourself, confirm that identity, and specify the transcript you wish to download.

Awesome! Thanks Harry.
