how the cards are dealt

Don't assume that Rob's information is correct. In an interview in
American Casino Guide 2003, IGT's firmware engineering manager,
James Vasquez, clearly states that only five cards are dealt at the
time of the deal, with the other five being dealt at the time of the
draw.

That's the same thing, stated a different way. According to info I have from IGT, both are essentially right.

While the machine is idle, it shuffles the deck repeatedly. The shuffle stops when the first coin is dropped or the first bet button pushed (so that the number of coins bet can't affect the outcome).

The top five cards then on the top of the deck are dealt as your starting hand. The next five cards on the deck are available for the draw, and will be taken in sequence off the top regardless of which dealt cards are held or discarded.

The shuffle resumes after the hand is completed and any payoff made. Since there is no way to know how many times the deck is shuffled before you make your next bet, it would not help even if you knew the complete RNG and shuffle algorithms.

Since Hask was disagreeing with Rob I suspect Hask was implying that
the shuffle continued between the original deal and the draw. I have
not seen the exact quote from the American Casino Guide 2003, so it
would be nice if the exact text was given to clear up any confusion.

For what it's worth, I just wrote to the Video poker division of IGT and posed the dealing question to them. If they answer me, I'll post the response tomorrow, or whenever they respond. No use arguing the point, we'll have the truth soon.

I post rarely here, but the question that keeps persisting about how
cards are dealt on an IGT machine was one that was bouncing around
my head as well for awhile when I saw that someone had posted it.
So, call me naive if you want, but I simply went to IGT's website
and sent them an email. They replied yesterday I think it was (took
I think a day and a half or two days) and the email I recieved
simply said "All ten cards used are selected at the time the game's
deal button is pressed." Granted that this reply is only from the
webmaster, but I'm willing to accept the reply as honest. Given the
nature of this board, i'm certain there will be at least one
conspiracy theory about igt wanting to veil their machines in
secrecy etc etc ... but I'd say that i'm satisfied with the answer.
Of course, we are only talking about IGT machines, but really,
that's most of them. Just thought I'd throw that out.
