How much can a full timer make?

I've read the No Winning at Wynn thread with great interest. Some very
good points there. This group is interesting since you have the
authors, local pros, tourist pros, mid-level guys and amateurs. Way
too much info is freely given out for my taste since all it can do is
dilute EV.

I'm curious though how much someone who does this full time can make?
Honestly I'm thinking that this is a waste of my time. I'm an
advantage player but am pretty new to this area. But I'm thinking that
the hourly rate isn't worth it at all. Anyone want to be honest on how
much pros can earn? How about the top tier guys?

Check the VP home page and go to polls. There is one poll for lifetime results and one for 2005 results.

Do you know how you can tell if someone is a professional gambler?

Thanks, I didn't even think to look at the polls. Wow, if that is
accurate then there is less money in this than I thought. I mean
only 14 people here (that voted) made over 50k last year??? It also
says something that more than 50k was the top choice to vote for.

Yeah, and 10 of those hit above the $50K mark thanks to simple luck
(I'm speculating, but vp variance is such that I'd expect that their
actual theoretical on their play was something less than that).

The poll is a poor indication of profit potential -- by far, the vast
majority here are rank amateurs for whom play is an amusement; for
that matter, I expect the strongest pros wouldn't bother with the poll.

Don't get me wrong: In the best venues there are a decent steady
supply of very good plays. It's the rare bird who has the interest,
drive and discipline to consistently take advantage of the best of
them in an advantageous manner.

I'll take what Harry said a little further. It should be pretty
obvious from some of the more recent comments as to WHY most of the
top pros don't post here. They keep their best plays to themselves
and they try to be as anonymous as possible. So, if you want to make
your fortune playing VP you're going to have to work real hard at it.

On the other hand, it is not too difficult to make a little money as
a recreational player. It doesn't take much effort as there are lots
of +EV games at the .25 level and other reasonable plays at the $
level. Here's a little math to demonstrate the situation:

To expect to make $50K a year playing .25 FPDW with .24 CB and
$200/month BB.

BB = $2400, 1% edge (100.76 + .24% CB) requires 4.76 Million dollars
to be gambled to make $50K.

4,760,00/1.25 = 3.8 million hands
3,800,000/800 HPH = 4760 hours/365 = 13 hours each and every day.

A typical 8 hour/day 5 day a week job with vacation requires much
less than half of this effort.

A top pro can generate over $250K in EV a year, but that's a lot of
hard work, a lot of travel, and he must be seriously networked.

The dynamics are ever changing, but I think $75K/yr is possible just
by staying in Las Vegas. That's a lot of schlepping around, but at
least it's schlepping on the Beltway, 95 and 15 as opposed to hopping
on planes or driving cross country.

Without getting into specifics, I've cracked over $100K in EV the last
siz years, a couple of those were well over $100K in EV. Last year I
was still plus, but survived a nasty minus fluctuation. Not totally
unexpected as these days, the better paying machines are with
increasingly higher variance (Super Times Pay, Multistrike,
etc.)-can't wait for full pay STPMS Royal Aces!). The EV, strangely
enough has been better this year than last year at all levels. Again,
this is an evanascent thing, but it's a good sign for VP players
everywhere that if they know what they're doing, they can be profitable.

Thanks for correcting my typo. I'd have done it myself, but Yahoo
Groups doesn't have an edit function.

Plays come and go all the time, as evidenced by changes in inventory
reported by group members. Sometimes the casino makes a mistake and
corrects it, sometimes they don't like their results on the machine,
and downgrades the paytable or reduces cb, or sometimes they assess
certain players as being too smart and restrict their benefits. On the
other hand, one finds new situations all the time, assesses the
profitability factor, and plays accordingly.
