How is Palms so good without cashback?

As someone who is willing to put some time on the machines, and play
pretty close to perfect, but whose primary goal is to just get a free
room, so I can move on to my real gambling interest (real poker), I
was wondering if Palms can fill that bill, especially since it's
relatively close to the Bellagio for my live poker needs.

Info in the links on this site though seem to indicate that there is
no cash-back program at all at Palms currently. I always thought that
getting back something was pretty standard, and what allowed you to
lose almost nothing (occasionally even to be a theoretical net winner,
being able to get over 100% return with a promotion in addition to the
regular cashback).

This all being the case, why is Palms considered to be so good by so
many here? Is it really just the large amount of Deuces type games?
My wife and I are coming to town in a couple of weeks, and really only
know 9/6 JOB and 10/7 DB fairly well. I can "get by" on an old-style
FPDW, but those don't exist at all anymore I'm sure, so we'd have to
learn some NSUD or Loose Deuces in a hurry.

I'm afraid your impression has been clouded by all the doom-and-gloom folks who love to think the end of the world is upon us. There's lots of FPDW all over town. While the total was drastically reduced by Coast's removing them from SunCoast, GoldCoast, and Orleans they are easily found. Every Station has several, both Fiestas have plenty, they are readily available downtown, at the Palms, at the Cannery, at Sam's, at MonteLago, even at Barbary Coast. Frankly, the only reason I'm playing them less lately is that I'm kind of bored with them. There are only a few at 50c but quarters are common.

So plan on having a good time playing the "old-style" ducks that are still quite current.

I'm trying to figure this out also. Though they do have a good VP
inventory, it has little else to offer, especially for a visitor.
I've put in some long hours, and racked up at least 50,000 unused
points, as I've found little use for them. Beyond eating a few
hundred meals, I'm trying to figure out how I can go use up my
points in one fell swoop. Room offers are lame ($69/night -
whatever happened to free?!)

Their gift shop is tiny and overpriced, and I'm not interested in
going to the movies (I can do that at home.) Any suggestions? I
suppose I could buy a couple of golf shirts. . .

I usually get my hair done in the salon. I would never pay what they charge
for a haircut but using coupons (hot shot- $25) and points it's a pretty
good deal.
