However, most often I'll tell a player the correct hold ... framing it
in terms of what's a good move if you like a sure thing, what a "true
gambler" would likely go for, and what technically is the most
valuable hold. I make it clear in putting the info forward that
whatever choice they go with is absolutely fine in my eyes, provided
that the choice best suits their temperament toward play.

If you remove that sense of "you're messed up if you don't play it
this way" that permeates some advice in the casino, and keep things
neutral, people generally appreciate the input ... no matter what the
outcome or if, in the end, they choose to ignore what's been offered.

Good points about giving "advice" -- my phrase is usually "here's how I play that hand, but it's your money." Sometimes I'll even try to disguise my knowledge by adding "...depending on how lucky I feel".

When I used to RECEIVE advice (unsolicited, of course, or better yet, outright criticism) from UN-knowledgeable players at blackjack, I used to respond, "any time you want to pay my bet off, I'll let you decide how I play my hand". Unless it was the dealer, who probably thought he really was giving me good advice, in which case I would just confess what a bad player I probably was for not doing it the way I was told.

And sometimes, to disguise that I was card-counting, I would ASK another player or the dealer what I should do on a "toss-up" decision, where it didn't really matter much what I did!

Likewise, at VP, on close decisions, I'll sometimes respond to advice with "yeah, sometimes I play it that way too, depending on how I feel - today I'm running good/bad, so I did it this / that way".
