Tipping maids is something about 50% of travelers do. I don't. It is
optional but appreciated.

Those who do tip leave from $2-5/day.

I was going to suggest you check the polls for this group, but I see
that the results of the rather extensive poll on tipping have been
deleted. They might have been lost at the same time the Jackpot
pictures were lost. Perhaps the administrator will decide to rerun the
polls on tipping so that we can what other people are doing, if
interested.

I usually tip $2 per day. If you tip at the end you won't get any better service than no tip at all. I usually find that the housekeeping staff puts forth a little extra effort when you tip as you go.

I'll tip a couple bucks each night for one room. When in AC, I usully
have a suite and a joining room if family goes with us. I leave a $3
total to cover both rooms. I really don't know what's "correct" but
maid service falls all over you asking if anything else I can get you.
They also really over load the soap, towels etc. My thought is the
maids work hard. If I give a buck for a coffee or a Coke I can give the
maids a couple. Also, this twisted mind believes the maid service
people are less likely to drop your tooth brush and jump on it.

Cheers....Jeep

I tip the maids everywhere I travel but I stopped tipping the maids on the
strip a couple of years ago. They are probably (by far) the best paid maids
in the country with their union wages and benefits yet they were on the
verge of striking a couple of years ago because they said they were being
over worked with too many rooms assigned to them. Well boo-hoo.

A tip is a gratuity given in return for a service or for an expected service / level of service. I do not feel this voluntarily gesture should have any bearings on what one is earning in wages/salary. I think we can all see our way clear to a little gratuity especially when the service warrants such .

I think your range is about right. I leave $3 to $5 daily and have left
more on occasions when we have had guests in a suite and there was more mess
in more space. I leave a short thank you note along with the cash. The
note allows them to be certain the money is for them and allows me to ask
for anything else I might need. Extra towels, shampoo, etc. It also lets
me thank someone for a job that is often thankless.

The maids, in mos thotels, are anything but overworked. I have checked in to rooms that haven't been cleaned that have been so trashed that if I were a maid I would tend to quit. They may be paid what u call "well" but if they make less than u for a service that is essential why are they any less valuable to the community? I personally like to tip in person and try to be there when they clean (safer as this way I know who's int he room and the scam that "I lost my key" or I left something in the room" by a stranger won;t work then as I always have them clean when I am present. It is good that the maids have a union to protect their rights. It is amazing that when one is on the job they want to get the greatest amount of pay for the least amount of work, but when someone else also wants that we complain. If the maids do a good service and are helpful I feel that a tip is good. Don;t many of you tip the cab driver's who illegally take you the long way from the airport v1a the
tunnel, drive above the limit, etc, from force of habit for absolutely lousy and dishonest service. The maid who cleans your tiolet, wipes up after you, empties your trash, and makes your bed deserves it. What is one hand's play per day to give to the maid?

My friend worked as a Vegas hotel maid. She said the
maid supervisor goes to all the dirty rooms first and
steals the tips so... try and tip in person if you see
any maids in the hallway. Never mind if they might not
be cleaning your room specifically.

I don't believe that this is a common practice. Any union shop would be on strike in a minute. I have had housekeeping thank me when they have seen me leaving my room.
I am a daily tipper. The last thing I would ever do is leave indiscriminate tips to whoever is in the hall.

Thanks, Albert.

This is identical to my own experiences.

I leave $2.00 on my pillow each morning of my stay. I was told to
leave the gratuity on the bed so that the maid knows that it is for
her/him.

Frequently, I receive verbal, and even written thanks for this
gesture.

I would hate to think that people woukd use the original post as a
excuse to stop rewarding these hard working folks.
