It is a test to make sure the machine is spitting out the correct number
of coins. They push a lever inside the machine and it spits out a set
number of coins. Lets say the setting is 4 coins but the machine
accidently spits out 6 coins. In this instance the machine would fail
the hopper test. On old machines it was not uncommon to occasionally get
paid 101 or 102 coins for 100 credits. With frequent hopper fills they
are looking for a serious machine counting error as the cause for the
frequent hopper fills. In the past shady individuals were known to take
advantage of known over paying machines by simply placing bills in the
validator and immediately cashing out with an interest payment.
