I'm not going to give a complete trip report but would like to share
an extraordinary event that happened to me at the RIO. We were
booked for 3 nights at the RIO and I had planned to play VP at Palms
and Gold Coast while there and pretty much stiff the RIO since their
VP is among the worst in Vegas. Also the comped rooms were on my
husband's card so I knew I wouldn't be tripped if I didn't play.

Thursday evening, while my husband was playing black jack, I sat down
at one of the bars near his table just to get a drink and wait on him
to finish so we could walk to the Palms.

I started playing .50 DB (really bad 9/6/4 paytable- 96.38%) ended up
putting in $300 but here's what I got:
first was 4 - 9's, then (A)(A)Q (A) A -- () means I held that card
dealt 4 - 9's
(6) 3 6 (6)(6)
J J(J)(J)
2 (6)6 6 (6)
(10) 7 10 10 (10)
DEALT 4 Q's
S.F. IN CLUBS (5) 6 (7 8 4)
4 (K)(K)K (K)
A 5 5 (5) (5)
(6) (6) 6 (6) X
Held the K-Q of spades and the A, 10 and J filled in for a $2000
SPADE ROYAL. Waited for the hand pay and at this point I switched to
DDB on the same machine just to see if streak would continue:
DEALT 4 8's
dealt 4 aces w/k, dropped the K and got an 8
then two hands later
(A) A (A) 4 A $1000 bucks, thank you very much
(6) (6) 10 6 (6)
A (2) (2) 2 2
(6) (6) 6 J (6)

In three hours of the most exciting VP I have ever played, got my
$300 back and cashed out a profit of $3900. Even before hitting the
Royal and getting the hand pay, everyone at the bar was watching -
even the bartender kept coming back every few minutes to see if I had
another quad.

It's ironic that I planned this trip to play 10/7 DB which I did at 4-
queens, El Cortez, and anywhere else I found it and never won a dime,
I broke even or lost everytime I played it and then hit the jackpot
with 9/6/4 - go figure.

P.s. I tried that same machine the next day and couldn't get 3 of a
kind on it, put a $100 back in, trying.

Couldn't help but notice in your post of that incredible run, you had
quad 6's 5 times. I played at Isle of Capri this weekend up in KC
and in an hour and a half, I hit 5 quads.....dealt 6's, then quad 9's
and quad Jacks and then TWO MORE quad 6's. Must be something in the
air about SIXES! Congratulations!

Mike A.

Funny, I haven't had that problem in a long time. It's not like
someone is pointing a gun at your head and making you insert $$$ and
your TR card there, you know.

The folks at HET have constantly demonstrated to me that they really
don't "get" video poker. The good news is that they make Luddites look
equivocal. I could lay it out to them irrefutably, and they'd still
stick to their 5 million focus groups and studies and any other
metrics they have. If they were on Star Trek, they'd be the Borg, no
doubt.

Au contraire, as a business, HET understands all too well how much
money they make from VP. If I were on the board, I'd make the same
decisions. As a player, I choose not to play VP for the most part at
their places but that doesn't matter because most of the seats are full
all the time. In fact, they have more machines and fewer empty seats
than when they had better paytables a couple years ago. It's not
because people can't find better paytables, within 5-10 minutes of the
local Harrah's, is Argosy Empress with paytables that are across the
board better than Harrah's and a few are full pay (which, contrary to
the database, Harrah's has NO full pay here.)

Bottom line, they can keep the machines busy with bad pay tables,
making more profit. They are in business to make a profit for
themselves, not us. It's a supply and demand issue. As long as there
are a sufficient number of people willing to play the bad tables, there
is no need to pay out more to get players.

I think they "get" video poker just fine...they just have a different
philosophy about how to maximize profits off video poker...
