I believe this was a case for which I have linked an article below. A
WMS software designer programmed a chip for a VLT machine type so that
after a series of buttons were pressed in a given order over a series
of plays (wager amount, etc.), the machine would generate a jackpot.

By the way, another trick of the trade:
There is an "add on" for Firefox and other Mozilla based browsers that
facilitates the creation of a "tinyurl".
Rather than having to go through several steps to:
- copy a URL to your clipboard
- go to the tinyurl website
- paste the URL to that webpage
- click to create the tinyurl
- copy that tinyurl into your clipboard
- finally, paste it into a post such as this,
the add on places an option to your browser tool menu that, in a
single step, creates a tinyurl for the webpage you're on and copies to
your clipboard (steps 1 to 5 above in a snap). Complete the last step
above and your done!
That add on is found at:

In another case, again on WMS machines, there was a way you could put bills in bill acceptor a certain way and it would give you more credits. Something like this - the details are fuzzy in my mind now.

Okay, here goes my Moose Drool addled memory again.
Sometime around 2000 or 2001 there was talk around about being able to
get a 45 coin bet for one coin on some Williams machines. I personally
don't get involved in such things as I follow the "honorable thieves"
code. I rely on legitimate strategy and all available information to
beat gambling. But some of the so called "casino hustler's" I'm
acquainted with are suited rather well for such endeavors. Mainly
because they are lacking in any real gamabling skill. Here's the story
of one of them:
"Peg Leg Ray" was a bonus machine player and sports better. I
frequently ran into him around the machines in Las Vegas. One day he
told me someone made him hip about how to get a 45 coin bet for one
coin on some types of Williams machines. He was going to California to
check it out.
Two weeks later he was back in Las Vegas closing out his apartment. He
told me he was going on the road to play the Williams machines. He
also told me, apologetically, that he was sworn to secrecy about how it
was done and would not be able to tell me how to do it. I told him not
to worry about that as I would get along fine. Then he was gone.
A year later I was walking through the Colorado Belle in Laughlin and
spied who I thought to be "Peg Leg Ray." It was hard to tell because
now he was wearing sunglasses, sporting a full beard, and wearing a big
hat.
I said "Ray, is that you?"
"Yeah, it's me" he said rather glumly.
How have you been doing? How did the Williams play work out?
"It was great until I got busted."
Where did you get busted at?
"Trump Marina in Atlantic City."
"So tell me what happened."
Here's what I remember about what Ray told me: They caught him on a
machine doing the 45 coin thing and arrested him. They charged him
with something like "knowingly playing a malfunctioning machine," he
had $25,000 in his pocket(very stupid on his part) and they confiscated
it. He then paid a lawyer $5,000 and got off with 6 months probation,
no jail time.
When he got it cleared up he hightailed it back to Las Vegas where, on
his first day back, he walked into Treasure Island, found a play on
bonus machine, sat down, stuck his players card in and started
spinning. Within seconds suit security swooped in on him wanting to
know what took him so long to get back from Atlantic City.
Peg Leg Ray no longer enjoys slot club benefits anywhere in the
country. He had to wear disguises because he was no longer welcome in
any casino once they find out who he was. And in this day and age,
with facial recognition technology, maybe disguises don't work
anymore. Anyways, I haven't seen Ray since I ran into him there at the
Belle that time.
