Cold turkey. Additional help, had been hospitolized for 11 days
with out cigs, so told the wife to empty all ash trays, trash cans,
anything that might have a butt. And no matter how hard I begged, do
not go get me any. (Had smoked 3 packs a day for nearly 40 years)
I quit in 1969 (was smoking over 3 packs a day at the time). Went to a
party in a 6th floor walk up apartment and almost couldn't do the stairs.
Remembered living in Paris and RUNNING up six flights of stairs to the office.
That was the end of it. I don't remember withdrawal though I'm sure there must
have been some. I said NOTHING to my friends and when they asked, I said, "I
don't know if I've quit". Kept that last carton in the house for a year
when I decided I really had quit
Oh, and I played in a world championship of
bridge a month after I quit - if I could do that, I figured, I could do
anything!!
