Help to quit smoking

Long long ago I was a 1+/pack/day smoker.

Peer pressure got me into smoking and later
in my adult life I noticed I was in the minority.

I look with disgust at crack heads, alcoholics,
other addicts and realized I was the same
except of my choice of drugs. This helped
my mental atttitude toward quitting.

Also, I realized the tobacco companies were
hustling me and the amount it was costing
everyday was ridiculous.

I put up a poster of an old lady smoking with
the caption, "Smoking is glamorous". It
used to be provied by the American
Cancer Society and was said to be very
successful but they are no longer available
(why?).

There is tremendous physical withdrawal.
They have nicotine patches now to help.

Funny, as soon as my smoker friends saw
me not smoking, they would offer me some
(before they were irritated if I had to ask).

I suggest putting the daily cost of cigarettes
into a piggy bank and then at the end of the
year, celebrate with a vacation. You will
have a bundle. I started to do this but then
stopped. Still, the amount saved daily goes
somewhere in my spending.

Previous smokers might contribute ideas as
to how they stopped smoking to help those
deciding to quit.

Mark Twain said "It is easy to quit smoking.
I've done it a thousand times". Do not
give up trying and do not berate yourself.

Cold turkey. Additional help, had been hospitolized for 11 days
with out cigs, so told the wife to empty all ash trays, trash cans,
anything that might have a butt. And no matter how hard I begged, do
not go get me any. (Had smoked 3 packs a day for nearly 40 years)
After about 2 weeks, I became able to live with again. After one
year I started my antismoking campaign.

My nearly 11 years since I quit. Doc says my lungs sound like a
teenagers. Lucky I guess.

I started smoking at age 13 or 14, and continued until I was about 50, 3 to 4 packs daily for many of those years.

One evening, in a bar, was having a dispute with the woman in my life . I looked at her, looked at the cigarette in my hand, thought to myself " "You're both bad for my health, don't need either of you", put out the cigarette, broke up with her, never touched another cigarette.

To preclude the obvious questions, cannot say the same about women (or bars, for that matter).

I recall some slight discomfort for a few weeks, after which I lost all desire to smoke.

While there currently are many differents aids to help you quit smaoking, I think you can do do only if you have a strong desire to do so.
