Help for a Beginner

<<Go to http://videopoker.fws1.com/custom.html>>

I have been recommending this site VERY highly for years - the most comprehensive list of paytables I know of.

I am sorry I offended anyone about recommending my own book - I guess I forget that this is "commercial." I don't look at it that way probably because I didn't write it for the money - it was far too much work for what I get in royalties (from $2-$4 per book) and I have a very comfortable retirement if I never wrote a word about gambling.

This person said he was a beginner and was asking a basic question that showed he was just beginning his study of VP. The only reason I write is for this very person. Yes, he needs lots of help, including vpFree and this is a wonderful site that I contribute to for free as often as I can find time to do so - even to neglecting other writing projects that would pay. I know of no commercial writer who contributes freely to Websites as much as I do. I don't want any medals - I am doing what I have done my whole life and love doing - I am teaching. Sometimes I get paid for it - and sometimes I do it simply because I love to help people learn. Someone who needs an explanation about 9/6, 10/7, etc. needs a lot of help so it doesn't take him years and years to learn to lose less money in a casino. Thank goodness this person realizes he needs to ask questions - but he is on the ground floor and doesn't even know many of the questions he needs to ask. For a measly $15 to get my book (or free if he can find it at the public library) he can save absolutely years of learning by trial and error, like many of us did, because I have written down a guide to shorten the learning curve. My books aren't the end of all VP knowledge - we all need to continue learning - they are only a boost to get one started on the right path - but I hate to see a beginner struggle when $15 would make things so much easier and faster.

I'm not mad at anyone - or putting down any other VP resource. In my books, I always include a long list of resources by other authors, useful Websites, etc. We all need all the help we can find. If you depend on only one book or one Website, you are missing out on a lot.

I say advertise and self promote as mention as you want. The
complaints are just sour grapes. We live in a capitalist society
right?

Well, Hans, let me start out by saying that while we do live in a capitalist society, people are not free to commercialize as much as they want on this group or any other elist or newsgroup of which I am aware. It generally violates the groups' charters, probably violates terms of usage with the hosting service as well as the individuals ISP, and at the very least violates netiquette. Otherwise, SPAM would be alright -- but I don't really think that you meant to go that far, did you? Could you image how less appealing a group would become if users needed to wade through a high percentage of commercials? It would kill the group.

Now, as for Jean's post, I was not personally bothered by it and did not think it was altogether inappropriate, but I would have _preferred_ that she would have sent it via private email instead of posting it here. This is because:
1. It is likely to stir up Rastiz et al in a renewed number of anti-Jean posts;
2. It does seem more commercial than usual and therefore does set a bad example/precedent for similar posts by others;
3. If she had sent it via private email, it's not like she would be depriving most of the group from info that they don't already have; the fact that there are always a few newbies in a group is never an excuse to post what otherwise shouldn't be posted, or that will kill a newsgroup/elist real fast, and that's why it is usually best to refer newbies to a FAQ for the most basic information.

Therefore, Jean could have also responded just as effectively, and more appropriately for my above-reasons, if she would have instead referred the individual to vpFree's Home Page (which too many people forget about much too often, so it would be a good reminder to the entire group), or she could have referred him directly to vpFree's FAQ page -- http://www.west-point.org/users/usma1955/20228/VP/FAQ.htm

Jean, I mean no offense by this; I like you and otherwise have no problem at all with your occasional references to your products (heck, I think I promote FrugalVP just about every chance I get). But I do think it is better to just stick to sig file advertising unless a poster asks a specific question about your product -- and then you can let'em have both barrels. :wink:

Finally, Jean, I realize that you do generously post information that I find helpful and useful, and I thank you for that.

Cheers.

A good guideline for all of those on this forum with commercial gambling interests.
