Help for a Beginner

I have been traveling to LV about 4 times a year for the last 3
years. I have always played blackjack, but on the last trip really
enjoyed some VP. I am trying to learn to read payout schedules, but
I am confused. Often references are to 9/6 or 8/5, for the flush and
straight, but when I look at a number of the schedules online, I
don't see these numbers. How am I misreading these things? Thanks,
anyone for the help.

The numbers refer to the full house and flush payouts. So you need
the know what game it is like Jacks or better, Deuces Wild, Double
Bonus or Double Double Bonus and then what the paytable is. The 2
numbers are an abbreviation for the entire paytable. Example:

10/7 Double Bonus means the game is Double Bonus Poker and the payout
for the full house is 10 and the payout for the flush is 7. THis game
is considered "full pay" since it returns over 100% with perfect play
over the long run.

Understand?

It's not flush and straight, it's full house and flush.

I thought some of the info explaining 9/6, 10/7, and etc could be
expanded a little.

Like was said the numbers refer to the one coin-in payoff for full
houses and flushes. If you look a paytable you will see these
numbers in the one coin pay list. If you look at the royal flush
payback you will probably see 250. This is usually changed in the
vp shorthand to 800 to reflect the 4000 credit (800 X 5 = 4000)
payoff bonus for playing five coins at a time.

In wild card games the numbers do not necessarily refer to the full
house and flush, but may be refering to the payoff for four of a
kind or some other hand of cards.

Lastly full pay does not necessarily mean that it pays over 100%.
For example "full pay" Jacks or Better pays back 99.54% but are
considered full pay because that is the traditional highest paying
Jacks or Better found in most casinos. Hence it came to be know as
full pay JoB (Jacks or Better). Granted there are other Jacks or
better games out there that pay over 100%, but they are not commonly
found and were put on the market after the traditional 9/6 game was
established. Likewise double double bonus poker only pays back
98.98%, but still has a 9/6 full house/flush payback, but other
hands are reduced to to pay off the larger bonuses. This game is
considered "full pay" also. Again there are higher paying double
double games around, but they are rare and came after the "full pay
version".

The best advice I could give is to look at the paytables on either
Winpoker or Frugal Video Poker and look at the one coin in list and
compare this to what you read/hear about video poker and the name of
the game associated with them. When it comes to wild card games the
concept is the same but the number may/will be describing different
hands. By comparing this input to actual casino games or computer
games you will develop a feel for the meaning of these numbers

BTW go to links, then FAQ abd also Glossary and get not only good
answers but also exact examples.

Please excuse me for the multiple posts, but if you go to links, pay
schedules, vpFREE pay table; it pretty much says it all.

Good information in that post. If you have more questions, I cover paytables in the "More Frugal Gambling" VP chapter, especially talking about VP terms like "full pay," etc. There are paytables given for 22 different games, including most of the best and/or common games.
