Harry, thanks for the response. I think we have finally moved a step
forward in the analysis. Yes I am saying that the $5match play is the
same as a $5 cash bet (the step forward). Let me explain.

Consider this situation, I give you 10,000 match play coupon with
which to play. Now as you go along and play these coupons keep your
winnings in separate piles, one pile for matchplay winnings one for
own money winnings. The two piles will of course be identical in
amount. Do you agree?

Now focus on the own money pile, after 10,000 hands (this is probably
to low a number to ge to true expected return, so of course we could
extend this play to 10,000,000 hands if we wish the ideas is the same)
Now what would you expect thaqt pile amount to be. I would say
playing basic strategy blackjack that would be 99% of the amount bet.
Agree? If you don't agree please explain why not. The whole ideas of
rational expectation is based on agreement here.

Now since the two piles contain the same amount therefore they have
the same expected return QED

For what it's worth, this isn't the first time I've seen someone who was otherwise very savvy getting wrapped around the axel like this on matchplay value. Jay, Harry explained as best as it can be explained. You just have to run thru his excercise and do the math. Matchplays are only worth (slightly less than) half face value.

Jay,

Your mistake is assuming the $5 match play is the same as a $5 cash
bet. It is not!

This is just an example of casino marketing/trickery to make you
think you are getting more than you really are. The first time I
used a match play I won my bet and had a short talk with the pit
supervisor because I thought I had been paid incorrectly. He
politely explained that this is a common mistake for first timers.
There is no need for any math skill at all!

A $5 cash bet win returns $10.
A $5 match play win returns $5 not $10.

In VP your argument is correct, because in VP they take away your bet
and you win on the pay schedule if you get a paying hand. In
blackjack, you receive the win AND your bet back. It's the difference

them. As many as I have. Why don't you write a program that
calculates wins if the ticket is returned and a program that

On the type of match-play I was talking about, bet $5 own money with
$5 match play coupon, the casino is in effect ginving you $5 of "free
money" with which to bet. To determine the expected value of that
coupon you must multiply the ev of the chosen game times the face
amount of the coupon. Now your experience on a single bet will not
match this value, however, over many years of using these coupons
your experience will approach this value. This value for blackjack is
approx. 99% of face value.

Besides the mechanics of having to put up $5 of your own money to
play a match-play the casino's coupon is still the same as any other
$5 bet. You are effectively placing two simultaneous $5 bets, the
expected return does not change when the amount of money changes,
a$25 per hand player faces the same house advantage as a $100 per
hand player.

If you place the bet on a "even money" roulette bet would your ev be
the same as in blackjck, No, blackjack has a much higher ev than
roulette than blackjack so your return will be high in blackjack,
even though your short term results on a few bets will appear quite
similar.

Does that help you understand how to determine the value of these
coupons? I hope so.

I know I am probably beating a dead horse by now, but this is the same
as casinos giving out non-negotible chips. which I maintain are worth
1/2 of said value. the key is that win or lose you still lose the
coupon or non-neg. chip, that is where they lose 1/2 of thier value.
If you could continue to use the coupon or chip until you lose the bet
, then they would have the EV of the game for a value, but when the
casino take the coupon or chip you have no chance to use its value and
it is worth less. If the casino gives me 100 $5 regular chips and I
go the the BJ table and make 100 $5 bets I will have way more chips at
the end of the 100 bets then if the casino gives me 100 $5 non-neg.
chips and after each of the 100 $5 bets they take the $5 non-neg. chip
and either pay me a $5 reg chip (win) or I have nothing when I lose,
after those 100 bets I will likely have about 40-60 reg chips and no
non-neg. chips. I would never have the exact amount of chips whether
they were reg or non-neg, so they cant have the same value.

Jim
