I'm a retired Professor of English who, despite my best efforts to
ignore these grade school level mis-uses, cringes at the
extraordinary frequency with which people confuse your and you're,
its and it's, their and they're and there, affect and effect, and so
on. Best to grind your teeth and let it go. Otherwise, you'll
spend your retirement still marking papers. Let's not even begin to
consider spelling lest we pull out what little hair remains on our
heads (Sheraton vs. Sheridan for a recent example).

But, in the context below, (and I have seen it many times here and
other places) should not "your" be replaced by "you're"? It seems
(to me anyway) that "your" is consistently misused in this respect.

Another thing that drives me crazy is using "affect" for "effect",
and vice versa.

I know that this is "English usage" and way off topic. I'll sit
here and wait for the "flames" to arrive. :slight_smile:

Ya think so? (Oooops; _do_you_ think so?) Well, I graduated Magna Cum Laude, I have a law degree, and I've practiced law for 23 years, including 18 as a judge. I probably make more mistakes in this group than anyone. Now, either I reflect a poor state of education, ... or perhaps you'll think it reflects gross carelessness and a lack of pride on my part for not proof reading, ... but I prefer to think of it as just relaxin' and havin' fun while keeping a rather health perspective of reality -- i.e., it don't matter none, so get real. :wink:

Please ... let's avoid politics here, or I'll be forced to tell you that winning the purple heart three times doesn't prove diddley ... and that is coming from a proud veteran of over twenty years in the military -- me (first active duty and then the reserves).

While I agree with this in general (to, too, and two really get to me when misused), I do have some reservations. I have always believed that the English language is a living language. By that I mean that it is constantly evolving with each generation and human development. Can you imagine holding a conversation with someone 250 years ago using today's english? The way we speak and write is nothing more than a mirror of the environment and that moment in time in which we live (for better or worse). School is suppose to be the great equalizer in teaching correct english, but as a society, we seem to be failing in this endeavor to large groups of people. Learning to spell correctly and been taken over by spell check although some people are too lazy to even use it. We also are not the only country having this problem. Far be it from me to criticize to much though as I am far from perfect myself.

You folks who have apparently taught for so long -- and believe me, I tip my hat to you -- well, because of your training and conditioning, your habit of picking out such errors, or perhaps the characteristics of your personality which helped motivate you to be a teacher in the first place (we know it wasn't money) ... well, those things have apparently created a perception problem.

For instance, you mention the extraordinary frequency with which people confuse your and you're, etc. On what basis do you conclude that this is primarily attributable to confusion, which is what I think you are implying? I can assure you that I will make that mistake myself, and probably quite often, but I can also assure you that there is absolutely no confusion in my mind as to which is which, and when to use the appropriate one. I can't really explain what mental defect I am suffering from when I'm on these groups, but I can assure you that the things I write professional take on considerably greater quality, even without proof reading, than the casual stuff that I post here. I _think_ that it's because I am ripping through on the type-writer so fast that my mind might not even be thinking of the correct word. Yeah ... yeah, that's the ticket. As for vpFree, the _only_ mistakes that matter here are math and strategy errors.

Anyway, please don't misconstrue meaningless errors on usenet or else your going to seriously under estimate some people. Heh, heh. I had to put a mistake in that last line. :wink:

proof reading. It is caused by lack of education.

Also the numbers are skewed due to the fact that Harrah's is the only
casino in a particular area. For example, I live in the New Orleans
area and often play at Harrah's New Orleans. There are other small
riverboat type casinos in outlying areas of town that can't come
close Harrah's which is downtown in the middle of the French
Quarter. So a South Louisiana casino poll, Harrah's takes 1st place
in all categories. Same would be for places like Cherokee, NC.

I personally like the Harrah's in New Orleans, but hate the Harrahs
in Vegas although I usually stay there on free room offers from my
play at New Orleans. I think Harrah's gets a bad wrap on this board
due to their awful Vegas property. Outside of Vegas though, they
seem to be more competive with other casinos. Harrahs New Orleans
has lots of 9/6 JOB and NSUD in many denominations and some with
progressives.

Just my 2 cents.

The fact that the statement was found in THEIR newsletter should be

a clue. Some would say Casino Player magazine is not exactly a
totally unbiased source, either.

I'm not saying Harrah's didn't really win the awards but you have

to ask yourself, "Who's giving this award and how is it earned?"
Customer surveys are notoriously unreliable. I've seen various
Harrah's properties receive "Best Video Poker!" awards several
times. How does that square with the lousy pay tables you find when
you actually check them out?

Not that you asked, but here's my take on Harrah's:

- I would give them an 'A' for overall customer service.
- I would give them a good solid 'B+' for their restaurants** and

many people think their Range Steakhouses are VERY good.

- Most of their contests/promotions are a silly waste of time.

Rubes flock in from miles around to participate, though.

- Their VP generally sucks (the AA at KC Harrah's is the exception)
- I have no opinion about their table games.
- The recent addition of poker rooms is nice, but I don't know what

the comp rate is.

- Cashback/comps are OK, not great.
- I've only stayed at 3 Harrah's hotels. No complaints from me

about the rooms. Some room offers not being valid on Fri-Sat nights
is irritating.

those disgusting awful Krispy Kreme donuts. What in God's name is in

It takes $5 per base point on slots and $10 per base
point on VP. Reward credits are earned at or above
the base point rate depending on what is played. The
base points are called "tier" points which determine
your "color" level. 0-2999 tier is Gold, 3000-9999 is
Platinum, and 10000 and up is Diamond. Each level has
its own perqs above the lower levels. Also, if you
earn 1800 tier points in one "day" you get Diamond (if
you ask). You need to check the "day" clock wherever
you play. I think Laughlin's is 6AM to 6AM. Good

Let me correct my comments to say that I cast too wide of a net.
Some errors are caused by speed or lack of proof reading. Those
kind are usually obvious. The blatant use of wrong spelling,
incorrect word choice and use of apostrophe for plural intent and
others is a lack of education.

As per another poster, this has nothing to do with video poker, but
many video poker players are sticklers for detail. Hence the posts.

Notice, I added the "XVP" to the subject line so you can skip over
it.

Carlos,

Looks like we are not going to make it to Harrah's on the 19th, got a
conflict. We really do want to meet the famous Carlos Lebron, though,
so lets try again soon.
