Harrahs, Valley View, and Viejas

I moved to San Diego about 8 months ago, and was close enough to
getting my Diamond card with Harrah's that Rincon was the only place I
played my first few months here. There are only three machines in the
place I can justify playing at my current bankroll, but they are
pretty much always available, and the waitstaff is very nice.

Most trips to Harrah's my coin-in is around $5,000. I try to go twice
a month, but some months I only get there once. My mailings have
typically been 4x$25 weeklies, though the month after I hit a Royal on
the $5 JoB machine, my weeklies were only $10. That struck me as odd,
considering my coin-in the day of the Royal was around $25,000. I
would have assumed they would have wanted me back. Not my fault I hit
a Royal :stuck_out_tongue:

Last month, I finally broke down and decided to try a couple other
casinos in the area. First up for me was Valley View. I knew the drive
pretty well, though it was tough convincing the car to turn left
instead of continuing to Harrah's. I arrived around 2:30pm on a
Thursday and found the player's club to sign up for my card.

The line was a full 45 minutes long, and I must admit, about 20
minutes into the process I was very close to saying to heck with it
and leaving and going to Harrah's. When I got to the front, they
explained their program and told me I could have a free buffet as soon
as I earned 4 credits. The woman seemed surprised when I asked her if
I really had to wait in that same 45-minute line to get my buffet
ticket. "Yes, you do." I am sorry, no "free" buffet is worth 45
minutes of my gambling time.

I asked her what it took to get my "Elite" status, and she indicated
it normally took six months and they would evaluate my play as I went.
I explained that my coin-in averaged $5k-$10k per visit, sometimes
more. She said that was fine, it would still be 6 months.

Using my iPhone to browse the vpFREE listings, I went wandering in
search of the "good" games. After about 45 minutes I was again
thinking about leaving and going to Harrah's. I think I checked pay
tables on around 150 different machines and didn't find any of the
full pay ones. I am not saying they aren't there, I am sure they are.
But either they were already in use (which is likely given the place
was pretty busy) or I couldn't make heads or tails out of the
directions given to find them.

Finally I broke down and decided to play some 10-play 8/6 JoB, which
was as good as I could seem to find that was open. Within my first 20
minutes there, the woman next to me (playing Double Bonus) hits five
quad-twos, and about 15 minutes later hits dealt quad-Kings on a
10-play. She was at $50 when I sat down, and was at $3300 when she
left about an hour later. I had to chuckle to myself, because I always
find it amusing when it just "isn't my day".

All in all, I had around $6k in coin-in and lost around $250, but the
aggravation of the place (both in signing up for a card and in finding
machines) was far more an issue for me than the wins or losses.

A couple weeks ago, I visited Viejas for the first time. Drive was a
little further than I expected, but once there, the customer service
was a pleasant surprise. My wait to get my players card was less than
3 minutes.

I found many of the listed machines with little trouble at all. About
half of them were already in use, but it was clear I had some options
to choose from. I wound up spending about 4 hours on the three 5c/25c
(3/5/10 Play) MG/MD listed as being outside the Pot O Gold room. Those
machines are actually 5c/10c/25c.

My first hour or so I had a hard time getting a waitress, but after I
tipped $2 for the first coke that she brought me, I had one every 5-10
minutes the rest of the day.

I have not yet received a mailing from Viejas, other than a form
letter thanking me for my first visit. But today in the mail, I
received a letter from Valley View saying I had been upgraded to Gold
Elite status. I guess that "six months" just flew by, since it hasn't
even been six weeks since I was there. To be honest, I had pretty much
decided I wouldn't be going back to VV. But I guess I will give them
another shot.

Any suggestions on day or time of the week when VV isn't insanely
busy? My work schedule is such I can get free time when I choose, so
if 7am is the best time to go, I would rather do that than to fight
crowds.

VView: Basically, it is a POPULAR place, due to overmarketing,
their promotions, and BUSSED in groups DAILY!

I found it better in the daytimes (7-4 pm, midweek);
So try Mon-Fri/midweek, and Friday may be best of all,
bec. not so many promos going on there.

Visit their WEBSITE to check out the daily promotion,
then you may have an idea of how large crowds will be;

Slot club TENDS to start getting lines around 9:45-10:30, when FIRST
group(s) of charted bus groups arrive; At least they've gotten a
little better by giving those folks their 'slot cards', coupons, etc,
as they depart the busses; however, I think a majority still have to
pick up cb/freeplay (if on mailing lists), buffet vouchers, etc. for
play at the booth.

SEPARATE DAILY bonus mailer coupons (Mon-Thurs) give you extra
freeplay from a dwg drum set up near the lounge/bar area;

If you are elite, I think that occurs just to the left of the main
slot club area (Special area for ELITE only players).....

AND be aware they hold TOURNAMENTS (mainly for ELITE players,
slots - 2x monthly, and there used to be a black-jack tournament.

BETTER machines (from what it sounds like what you play) might be in
the high limit area. Try the 3/5 play .25-.50-$1;
best games were Super Aces; Super -Dbl bonus also quite good.

50-100 plays otherwise in denom up to .25;
Super DB and more volatile Deuces Wild DBL-Bonus game;

GL. PS - only 4 clearly marked 'over 100%' games; you'll find them
on inside row beyond the BLACK & BLUE steakhouse entrance, in that
other casino area between slot booth and what would be the wall of
that restaurant. The game is Bonus DW, prog. on 2s and higher.
The RF tends to hit by 1200 (which is GOOD, as I've gone over taxable
before). THe 2s + ace can grow upwards to $700; Std. 2s hit by $275
most of the time.

Re: Valley View

I've only been there twice. Both times were mid-day on Fridays (including
this past Friday). The first time, I waited 5 minutes in the players club
line. This past trip, there was NO line at all. BTW, their buffet *is*
worth a 45 minute wait! Really. It is! I had lunch there last Friday and
was amazed at how great it is. I was expecting it to be mediocre, but was
delighted to find very tasty food! My favorite is the coconut shrimp (which
is only served at lunch time).

Maybe, Tallfroggy2001 happened to arrive just after a bus arrived? That
would explain the 45 minute wait at the players club.

The lines at Valley View are AWFUL.

You will stand in line for EVERYTHING, even if you're Elite.
The wait in the Elite buffet line is often two hours!

If you complain about the lines, they'll throw you out.

TC,

Last Friday, September 19th, at approx. 12:30pm, the buffet line had
three people in it - me and the two people ahead of me. At the same time,
the 'elite' line for the buffet had about 8-10 people in it. Since this was
my first time at the VV buffet, I do not know what is 'normal' for that time
of day on a weekday. But, that was my personal experience.

How do you know that they will "throw you out," if you complain about the
lines? Sounds a little harsh to me. :wink:

We have been to VV probably between 8-10 times usually always on Friday
between 12-4pm (on the way to Harrahs Rincon) We have never waited in
line at the players club for more then maybe 5 minutes. The buffet
always seems to have a line but thats because they send everyone that
has a players card a free buffet every month. Its definitely one of the
better buffets I've been to.
The casino in general is always crowded (on Friday afternoons) and the
better games are hard to get on.
they have better pay VP than Rincon at the $1 and under levels.

There is nothing playable that I have found at either property. There
are NSUD at $1 as well as 8/5 Bonus, but besides that I can't find
anything of any value.

Comps are good. But, I must agree that the lines at the buffet and
Players' Club are horrendous.

You may not have read any of the past emails about the machines
available at Valley View. There are several games for quarter
players that are very close to 100%.

I agree the lines for everything can be bad but I am curious as to
who made you leave a casino for complaining about how long a line
is. I know many people get vocal and some even get rude but I have
not seen anyone actually be told to leave a casino for complaining
about how long a line is. The lines can be very long during elite
slot tournaments. For example; tomorrow is an elite tournament -
elite gold not silver. It will be crowded. Fridays normally are.
The tournament dates are simple to figure out if you get a mailer
every month. If you choose to eat during the times that are popular
than the lines are long and they can take up to an hour or longer. I
have been there for 6 years and never waited in line for 2 hours. 1)
because if the line was that long, I would come back later. 2)
because they do try to move you through it quickly (at least in the
elite line they do). perhaps the other line is longer than an hour
wait.
We tend to eat at earlier/later times when the lines are real long.
You might try eating lunch at 11:00 or 1:00. For dinner you might
try going to eat around 4:30/5:00 or maybe after 7 or so. It
certainly does get very crowded and there are plans to enlarge it
even more. If its not a free buffett and instead maybe a comp or we
are paying than we go to BLDs. you might try that sometime if the
lines are real long.

Also, they have double points between 3AM and 10AM Tues, Wed and
Thursdays mornings and it is not very crowded at all. You might want
to try those times and you get double points to boot. Mostly as long
as you show up there by 11 you are doing well except for Fridays and
Saturday nights. They have been outgorwing since they expanded
because of their promotions and because of the concerts. There are
lots of good play machines and yes during crowded times it might be
hard to get on those machines. They normally review your account
about every 4-6 months. Elite status is not automatic. They had to
do this because of so many people who barely qualified for elite and
got all the options other elite players got. It got to be over the
top. They did change their requirements but I think its still not
high enough because I know many players that barely qualify at VV and
yet would never qualify at other casinos for a similar status.

If you are playing at Harrahs' rincon and you are not playing $5 or
higher VP than you may not be interested in Valley View's VP because
I know Harrhah's offers nothing that compares below $5 unless you are
at the right machine, at the right time a progressive is extremely
high. If you are playing slots than it really does not matter which
casino you choose to patronize on a average day. if you are going up
there on the weekend, may I suggest Saturday or Sunday morning and
early afternoon. Otherwise, it is going to be crowded.

VView: Basically, it is a POPULAR place, due to overmarketing,
their promotions, and BUSSED in groups DAILY!

I found it better in the daytimes (7-4 pm, midweek);
So try Mon-Fri/midweek, and Friday may be best of all,
bec. not so many promos going on there.

Visit their WEBSITE to check out the daily promotion,
then you may have an idea of how large crowds will be;

Slot club TENDS to start getting lines around 9:45-10:30, when

FIRST

group(s) of charted bus groups arrive; At least they've gotten a
little better by giving those folks their 'slot cards', coupons,

etc,

as they depart the busses; however, I think a majority still have

to

pick up cb/freeplay (if on mailing lists), buffet vouchers, etc.

for

play at the booth.

SEPARATE DAILY bonus mailer coupons (Mon-Thurs) give you extra
freeplay from a dwg drum set up near the lounge/bar area;

If you are elite, I think that occurs just to the left of the main
slot club area (Special area for ELITE only players).....

AND be aware they hold TOURNAMENTS (mainly for ELITE players,
slots - 2x monthly, and there used to be a black-jack tournament.

BETTER machines (from what it sounds like what you play) might be

in

the high limit area. Try the 3/5 play .25-.50-$1;
best games were Super Aces; Super -Dbl bonus also quite good.

50-100 plays otherwise in denom up to .25;
Super DB and more volatile Deuces Wild DBL-Bonus game;

GL. PS - only 4 clearly marked 'over 100%' games; you'll find

them

on inside row beyond the BLACK & BLUE steakhouse entrance, in that
other casino area between slot booth and what would be the wall of
that restaurant. The game is Bonus DW, prog. on 2s and higher.
The RF tends to hit by 1200 (which is GOOD, as I've gone over

taxable

before). THe 2s + ace can grow upwards to $700; Std. 2s hit by

$275

···

most of the time.
