Harrah's Shocker

Hi Gang:
Harrah's AC has been slowly replacing all their video poker machines over the past month or so with newer table-top models and Friday they turned on the four new machines in the Diamond Cove that replaced the ones that had 9/6 jacks on them.
Shocker! The four machines now have seven games on them that sport pay tables which return over 99%! Besides 9/6 jacks, they have 8/5 bonus poker, 9/7/5 double bonus, kings or better joker poker with a 4,700 royal and three Aces and Faces games. The Double double Aces and Faces returns 99.45. The games can be played at the $1 and $2 levels and the three machines on the opposite side of the bank offer the same games at the $5 and $10 levels.
There is also some scuttlebutt that the three machines out on the floor in the non-smoking area that had 9/6 jacks will feature the same menu when they are eventually turned on. Those machines are multi-denominational and can be played from quarters to $2.
So, the question is, What's going on here? Caesars/Harrah's has been notorious for downgrading their video poker inventory at casinos all over the country yet this signals a significant upgrade at Harrah's AC. Does it have something to do with the new GM, Rick Mazer?
With business falling off every month, is this a desperate move to get more players in the casino and a message to Borgata which has a much larger inventory of playable VP games?
Whatever the reason, it will be interesting to see how it plays out ... and how long it lasts!
Regards,
CoachVee and Hedy

be sure to note that to the right and up from that bank is another bank, short pay.

I recently returned from Lake Tahoe and noticed some of the new sparkling fresh video poker machines at Harrah's and Harvey's. Surprisingly the exact same games and paytables have been installed in all the machines I checked.

Most single line video poker machines at Harrah’s Rincon have been replaced with new ones, but with worse paytables. I haven’t seen any with 8/5 Bonus Poker, 8/5 ACE$ Bonus, etc. They haven’t gotten to High Limits yet, but it’s probably just a matter of time.

We were in KC in September and the host told us they were also putting in all new VP machines but he emphasized that they were putting in the same chips from the old machines so there will be no change to their hold.

Given KC’s poker selection, I’m not surprised they are leaving the games the same. They are terrible to begin with.

Something important to note about “Bonus Poker” at Harrah’s Rincon (don’t be fooled!):

I went to play some of the new machines recently installed in the video poker area. I looked for bonus poker, and lo and behold there was 8/5 “bonus poker” (quotations here are important). I only checked the full house/flush ratio (the game was clearly labeled bonus poker with the same font/artwork you usually see for the game) then finally, I hit my first quad: four two’s! Yippee, right? Except I was rewarded 150 quarters instead of the usual 200. I scrolled up to check the paytable to see what gives, and I couldn’t believe my eyes. The only “bonus” in this game is that all 4 of a kinds pay 150 quarters at max bet instead of 125.

There is no bonus for different kinds of 4 of a kinds, the game essentially is 8/5 JoB with a 30 credit quad instead of 25 credits. Probably a little dumb of me to not check out the entire paytable first, but I was just there to relax and have some fun. Feeling like you’re being conned is the opposite of fun. If I want to play “Bonus Poker” I expect actual Bonus Poker, not JoB with a crap paytable. Having JoB with a crappy paytable labeled as “Bonus Poker” is blatantly misleading. It really rubs me the wrong way and I won’t be going back to Harrah’s again, that’s for sure. I think I’ll stick to Barona for now.

Anyone else encountered “bonus poker” in their region? It’s not so much the shitty EV that bothers me (though that’s certainly part of it), it’s that IGT is apparently changing the definition of what “Bonus Poker” is for their games to something much more bland. I enjoyed Bonus Poker because it was more volatile than JoB, but not incredibly volatile like DDB and its variants. It was the middle of the road option that fit my playstyle and budget perfectly. Having it and JoB on the same machine seems redundant, and I can’t figure out why it exists except to trick people only checking the flush/full house ratio into thinking it’s a decent paytable.

There’s a lesson in this too, of course. Never, ever, ever let your guard down in a casino! (especially a harrah’s property)

Cheers,

Brian

This group has discussed that game from time to time and in the vpfree2 pay table list, this game is called both “Bonus” Poker and Jacks or Better.

8/5 with a 150 coin quads is fairly common. There is a better version that pays 175 for quads (99.65% ER) that sadly has recently disappeared at one of the casinos I monitor for vpfree.

That version of bonus poker has been around for awhile and is quite easy to spot. However, there is a more evil version of bonus poker out there that is not so easy to spot. I got caught playing it a few hands before I realized what was really going on. It is a regular 8/5 BP game, but it pays even money on two pair. I believe this one is a sub 90% game. Ouch.

I got caught with one of those too! Ballys AC is full of them. Luckily I hit four 2’s before I realized the 1:1 two pairs, cashed out and ran.

Yeh Brian…Had not been to Rincon since September; last weekend I accompanied my wife, as she had an invitation to a slot turnament, and scouted all the VP before having a round of play. I always liked to play at the Fiore bar top but this is now unplayable…new machines with multiple games and the infamus Bonus Poker with reduces pay schedule as you described. The few machines still “relatively” good to play are at the Sports Bar…how long they will be there ??? who knows!!!.

Wife goes to her turnament and leaves me at the Sports Bar where I’m having a good run at a “old” Bonus Poker machine. Wife returns 1/2 hour later but the Bar is now fully occupied and she can’t get a seat. She starts to walk away as I get a 3 card royal an surprise…I convert! I was very surprised to get my second Rincon Royal this year!

I was up a little before the Royal, but since wife was down $200.00 and had lousy luck at the turnament, we decided to go to the free buffet and run! We each did about a 3 hour session and it will probably knock us down for future offers. The way we see it is if they remove all of the machines left with any kind of play we still enjoy, we will be out of there no matter what!

By the way, the Fiore Bar was all but empty (always full in the past) as the bartender commented that “things are very slow since the machine changes”. Bad for lucrative drinks business??? Just my 2 cents worth.

Just thought I’d update everyone on the current status at Rincon (didn’t know how to create a new e-mail so replying to this one). I was there a week ago and they had all sorts of great (for CA) paytables. I was playing 8/5 25c bonus poker on a double super times pay machine. Usually the super times pay machines have worse paytables because the super times pay bonus adds very slightly to the EV, so I was happy. Lots of volatility but it worked out well for me and left $500 richer. Then I went back yesterday and almost all the video poker machines were gone or out of service. I’m not sure what’s going on there, but I’m worried that the good paytables were only temporary since I couldn’t find anything comparable. It looks like they may be moving over to all new machines which had the questionable “bonus poker” and other crappy paytables.

Were those the two DSTP machines inside the High Limit area? Or the machine(s) that used to be in the newly remodeled area where Pinks used to be and Corked now is?

Looks like Rincon is the next to get the CZR video poker treatment. If the good pays return, get ready for the $25/$50 dollar per point treatment.

They were in the area near where pinks used to be.
