I have an offer for 500 free Harrah's reward credits. I am wondering
if anyone can tell me roughly what this is worth in comps? A few
buffets, or more?

Harrahs Reward Credits ?
I'm guessing that this offer was from a partner of Harrahs - such as
an offer to change long distance, etc? Normally, these types of
offers only count toward 'Tier Status' (Platinum/Diamond) at Harrahs,
and do not add any value to your comp account.
There was similar discussion a while back regarding the Reward
Credits earned with the Harrahs Visa and it was determined that these
credits do not generate any comps or CB.
