Harrah's/Harvey's Tahoe input requested

We're booking into Tahoe and would appreciate a recommendation on
which hotel/casino might best suit us. We have an offer for an upper
floor Premium room.

Based upon the inventory report here we'd likely play the 50-play MD
BP machines (how many are there at either casino?) We'd prefer to
stay/play at the same property.

Thanks.

- Harry

What you may not be aware of is that for all intents and purposes,
they ARE the same property; they are across a narrow street from one
another and connected by an underground walkway.

The rooms at Harrah's are a bit nicer than Harvey's IMHO, but if you
want views, you'd better specify. Both places have rooms facing the
lake, facing the Nevada mountains, facing each other, and facing--the
parking lot. If this matters to you, inquire upon booking.

The VP at each place pretty much sucks---Harrah's used to have FPDW,
then they had JOB, then NSUD---now the best you can find is 9/6 DDB
for the most part. Harvey's is, if anything, worse. At both casinos
you find mostly AWFUL games like 8/5 JOB, 9/5 DDB, 9/6 DB, etc. etc.
etc. GAG ACK BARF.

The database on VPFree is woefully out of date. I'm not saying you
won't find ANY decent games there, but just remember that we're
talking HARRAH'S (ecch) here. You'll be lucky to find 99% games.

Now the good news: Tahoe in summer is heaven on earth. If you don't
have a car, rent one--drive around the lake. Do it once in each
direction. Forget the casino restaurants--Harvey's is AWFUL, and
Harrah's mediocre--and search out good eateries in South Tahoe. On
your round-the-lake drive, Tahoe City has some great restaurants.

I'm going to stay there for four days next month--comped--and I intend
to play ONE DOLLAR through their crap VP machines, and enjoy Tahoe,
not the inside of their lousy casino(s). I may take one of those
evening lake cruises. Tahoe--ahhhhhh. Harrah's--ugggghhhh.

Hi Harry!

If you haven't been to the South Lake Tahoe area previously, I
believe that you'll love it. The natural wonders of lake and
mountain vistas, plus the (usually) much cooler summer temps, make
this an ideal destination during the hot months.

For fourteen years, from 1984 until 1998, EH and I traveled to South
Lake Tahoe each August. On each trip we stayed several days at
Harrahs/Lake Tahoe, as an adjunct to our Reno trip.

Back in those days, Harrahs had EVERYTHING going for them. Every
positive VP game (including, in 90's, FPDW!) Even their standard
rooms are much like suites, with sitting areas and TWO FULL BATHS!

IMO, Harrahs/LT has the best standard rooms of any casino that I've
ever visited. I would therefore put Harrahs head and shoulders above
Harveys or any other LT or Reno Casino hotel, for room quality.

As far as VP inventory, weeeelllll.......you just can't have
everything any more! }}O:

To my knowledge, the best play at Harrahs is $1.00 3/5 play 9/6 JOB
or 50 play .25/.50/$1.00 8/5 BP. I think that they also have single
line .25/.50/$1.00 8/5BP. There is nothing much else decent below
the $1.00 level. At Harveys, right across the street (and
accessible by an underground tunnel which allows a pedestrian
to bypass the heavy street traffic) they have a $1.00 8/5BP prog.,
which very occasionally, has a positive meter. Most everything
else, at both Harrah's casinos, are short pay.

I understand from some of my Northern Nevada VP friends, that "Bill's
Casino", also owned by Harrahs and right next door, no longer has
the favorable .25c FPDW, FPJW & 10/7DB, that they featured for a few
months (sans player's club, comps, CB etc.) A few local eager
beavers made sure that play flickered and burned out all too soon.

Do go to LT for the gorgeous scenery, the (usually) crisp mountain
air, the cooler summer day temps, the nice accommodations and
generally good eating. VP pay tables are definitely secondary to
the other pleasures of the Lake.

If you have time, and a vehicle, a side trip (45 to 60 minute drive)
to Reno, where you can play most full pay, and even 100%+ games at
the Silver Legacy, might soothe the VP itch.

If you haven't already, you might want to pose your questions on the
vpFREE/Reno site. Those folks would have the most current machine
information.

Have a great and lucrative trip!

~Babe~

P.S. If you're interested in some non-vp activities in the LT area,
or further info about casinos in the Reno vicinity, please write to
me privately.

quarter up uprights in high limits when we visited last year.

I thought the buffet at Harrahs was very good, especially dinner. The
upscale restaurants are fairly expensive, but offer outstanding views.

I agree with your Harrah's restaurant assessments, 2-Wild.

I thought that that the Harrah's buffet was reasonably priced for the
quality of the offerings, and featured a wide selection of nicely
prepared dishes. Sometimes the service is a bit lax, but, if you can
score a table-with-a-view, you'll hardly notice.

I also very much enjoyed Friday's Steak House, where we were invited
to dine a few years ago. Again, I thought that the prices were
reasonable for an upscale Steak House. The Filet that I enjoyed, was
delicious.

The Summit, though VERY pricey, is, IMO, one of the better Gourmet
Rooms in Nevada. It's great for a special occasion, a splurge, or if
you keep hitting the .25c 50 play machines, a nice comp! {{O:

Both Fridays and The Summit also have outstanding views of glorious
scenery.

I did prefer Harvey's Coffee Shop, to the CS at Harrahs though.
Actually when Caesars was still there, that was our choice for
breakfast each day. I've never been to the Ciel Blue, so I can't
comment if it's up to Caesars former quality.

I also was quite surprised at the woefully out of date comment. I
thought things were in good shape, as I visit quite often. The talk of
the town earlier this year was Bill's. Bill's is a Harrah's property,
but has no slot club and is 100% smoke free. They were offering FPDW,
10/7 DB, 10/6 DDB and more in multi denonimation including $1. The play
lasted a short time, and there are only 4 quarter games left. Have a
great time at Tahoe.

Hip, Hip, HOORAY.......Three big cheers for you GOLDFADA!

Of course, you now realize that your ADT at Harrah's is now minus
500. On the Junket flight home, did they put you in the last row of

The feedback is much appreciated ... particularly Babe's thorough run
down and Bob's tangential trip report.

As background, the casino stay is an afterthought. We're booked into
a timeshare on the north end of the lake Labor Day week and a mailed
airfare reimbursement offer seemed ample excuse to extend the trip for
a 2nd weekend.

I'll presume that Harrah's/Harvey's machine inventory is accurate as
reported. In absence of our mainstay $1 single line Jacks, playing
through 10+ lines on the 50-play BP will bring ample satisfaction --
here in AC we don't get anything attractive in multiline above 3-play.
(We'll keep an eye on the BP prog, of course.)

Very sad to hear from Babe that the 4 remaining quarter machines that
had FPDW have been downgraded. That's another game thirst that AC
leaves entirely unslaked (even UD isn't to be found).

Plan is to put room selection into the hands of very strong NV
Harrah's nat'l host, keeping fingers crossed that a decent lakeview
room will be blocked for us (but will express a bias for Harrah's, all
other things equal).

Again, many thanks!

- Harry

In the sardine cans they call air seats now, I find it rude to recline a seat. I would never do it.

Harry, did you know that there are also casinos on the North Shore Lake
Tahoe? The flavor of the north shore is much different than the south
shore. Some call the casinos dumpy, others say it is where the people
in the know go. You can make your own decision. I spend my time about
50/50 between the two places. Without a doubt the Hyatt Regency Hotel
Casino is the class of the north, and in my opinion of all of Lake
Tahoe. Treat yourself and the Misses (I guess?) to a dinner at the Lone
Eagle on the shore of Tahoe at the Hyatt at sunset. The Hyatt Regency
is located at Incline Village, and the other casinos (4 of them) are
located at Crystal Bay. Check out the Reno/Tahoe database for some of
my other comments.

Harry, I am a frequent visitor to both ends of the lake and to Reno.

After a week at the more laid back North Shore, you would find the
touristy crowded South Shore, well, kind of touristy and crowded.

The South shore is a considerable drive from the north, and hardly
worth the short VP paytables at the casinos. The california side is
all tourist trap beach shops. Best bet in town is the Delta Queen
Dinner cruise.

I suggest these activities for your stay in the North Shore area:

Rent a jet ski or two... $100 per hour. If you have a wet suit,

bring it, the lake is around 55 degrees.

Dinner cruise on a lake boat around Emerald Island.
Drive to Virgina City. Quaint little gold rush town with a lot of

history. Take the city tour on the tractor-drawn tram. Lots of 1
cent VP, but all shorted paytables now.

Side trip to Carson City. Not much to see, but good VP at the

Carson Nugget. Smoky though.

Side trip to Reno. Last 100+ games (DDlx @ $1, and JOB 9/6/4500

$1)are in JA Nugget in Sparks. The twin odd shaped towers you see in
the east is John's. Comps are earned at 7.50 per 1K coin in, and are
read out everytime you place a player card in any machine. Smoky though.

Labor Day weekend is when they have "The Best in the West Rib

Cookoff" at JA Nugget. They close off the streets in Victorian
Square, and fill it with the usual street fair booths selling arts and
crafts, fair food, and a stage with continuous free B-level
entertainment. Oh,and yeah, they have ribs, ribs, ribs...... Approx
40 different cooks whip up a ton of ribs each, which are served buffet
style in the food tent, and the public gets to sample as many as they
wish and vote on the best.

For Smoke-free with good VP, try the Atlantis Skybridge. That is

the glass bridge crossing Virginia Street south of town, and across
from the Airport. Great All-U-Can-Eat Sushi Bar and Oyster bar in the
skybridge as well. They have free slot tournaments Wed/Thurs.

You really remind me how nice the lake area is and I'm thinking it
would be a nice place to visit again. It's been a zillion years
since I have been there. I'm wondering; do I remember right that
Reno has an old car week? Something like a back to the 50s thing
and the whole town is involved. I really liked Reno too. I seem to
remember Reno as a "cowboy town". Cowboy town is used and intended
to be a term of endearment so there is no need for anyone to
get "mad". Sometime I wonder why Reno is never on my list to visit
when I travel west.

I believe what you are refering to is Hot August Nights. It's held the
first week of August (3-12 this year). I've been wanting to go, but it
hasn't worked out yet. I've heard a lot of good reports about it,

Thanks much to you (and hamstockman) for some great ideas for our
trip. I'll note that the intended casino play is largely an after
thought -- given Harrah's airfare reimb for one, it's a good chance to
score some RC's (we're giving thought to going for 7*).

During our week on the north side of the lake we look to do a lot of
hiking, some biking and maybe a horseback riding outing (if I can talk
Bev into it -- she's pretty confident some type of negative psychic
energy thing takes place between her and any horse she mounts). Plus,
we both have a backlog of summer reading that should make for some
lazy days. Unless a hard rainy day comes our way, I don't expect to
tour the area casinos (but I'll be keeping a list handy ;). We do
look to run up some mileage in a one day road trip to thoroughly
explore the area.

- Harry

Here's a link to the events and entertainment schedule for the Reno area:

http://www.visitreno.com/index.php.

Many links on that site for special events, entertainers, and misc
Reno Info.

Yes, "Hot August Nights" is coming up in two weeks, then they have
"Street Vibrations"...... The streets vibrate due to the million or so
Harley Davidsons and the numerous Rice Rockets there for a huge
downtown street fair.

Then there is the Hot Air Balloon Race in Sept.

Reno is no longer a "cowboy town". The only horses I ever saw in Reno
are the iron horses in the railroad yard next to JA Nugget.

They are building two huge sporting goods outlets, including a 200,000
sq ft Cabela's at the edge of town, near Boomtown. If you are a
sportsman, a visit to a Cabela's is an out-of-body experience. Be
sure to try the Elk sandwich in the Deli.

Admittedly, Reno doesn't have pyramids, musical fountains, volcanos,
Celine Dion, Star Trek Experiences, white tigers, topless pools, or
walk-thru aquariums.

But Reno does have playable VP, great comps per coin-in ($6/$1000 at
Atlantis, $7.50/$1000 at JA Nugget), Casino room rates <$80 a night,
free casino to airport shuttles, interesting annual events, unique
locations for day trips, summer weather only in the 80s-90s; great
skiing nearby, Starbucks, Thai restaurants, Macy's, flush toilets, hot
water showers, and the Fire Engines aren't pulled by horses anymore.
