Harrah's Christmas Shopping

I had an interesting experience when I went to the Harrah's
Christmas Shopping event at Caesars Palace on Saturday. When I tried
to check in at the entrance, the attendant got a big CNE on the
screen when entering my Total Rewards number into the computer. I
guess it stood for Can Not Enter as I was given a note that said CNE
and was told to take it into an adjoining room where I had to sit
down with a suit. Our conversation went like follows:

It appears that you play does not qualify you for this event.

I thought this event was open to everyone who played this past year.

It is. <pause> But your play does not qualify you.

I just played enough at Flamingo yesterday to renew my Diamond Card
for this year. Could you look at that play?

I can't see your Flamingo play here. Someone here at Caesars has put
a note in your account that you have not been playing enough to
qualify for offers.

I don't understand. I thought this shopping event was based on my
play for the last year at ALL Harrah's properties.

I see here you have been in several times and only played for a few
minutes.

They send me those coupons that give a bonus for earning a certain
number of points so that's what I do.

But here is a date where you only played for exactly 5 minutes.

Sir I play in High Limits, it only takes a few minutes to earn the
needed points.

Here is a date where you came in and got a comp and didn't play at
all!

Sir I thought comps and offers were based on past play.

They are. <<pause>> But you have to play like you should. You have
to play differently.

Sir I played a lot at Flamingo yesterday. They sent me a letter
saying how many more points I needed to renew my Diamond Card so that
is what a played.

Oh here it is. You played just barely over an hour! An hour and 3
minutes. That is not playing enough.

But I earned over 7000 points. That is $70,000 on video poker that
is $10 per point.

You played $70,000 on video poker? Right!

Sir it was a $100 machine and I played 3 coins a hand.

<<pause>> I'm telling you are not playing like you should.

Should I play quarter machines instead of in High Limits?

I'll put a note in here that I have talked to you about your play.
If you don't change how you play, you will not continue to get offers.

Can you tell me how much I need to play each visit?

Play like you want. I'm telling you that you've got to change how
you are playing to get offers. <he exits>

All that grief for a bottle of Caesars Man cologne and a shake up
flashlight! I think the gist of it was that they are looking for
more consistant play and they seem to be looking at time played. I
don't think it was what I played. I had played big at Caesars on one
day early in the year to get a good daily average and had been
playing my bonus coupons at other properties to preserve the high
daily average at Caesars. I think redeeming a Birthday offer at
Caesars for a $200 gift card and giving them no play is what
triggered the problem. The troubling thing is that getting
labeled "no offers" at one HET property could get you the same
treatment at all properties that use Total Rewards, which is now
close to 1/3 of Las Vegas.

(snip)

Interesting post. Perhaps you worked the system a little too well
here. I am personally not big on this approach because sometimes
things change and now you're confronted with a play at a property
you've put in a consecutive number of zero or near zero trips.
Alternatively, something could happen like what happened with you.
There's plenty of stuff around town not to have to mess with this.

As for your Caesars play, you should know, especially since you play
$100 coins, that $30K is not a big trip or day, but just a warmup.
Still pretty impressive what a $1200 ADT, even though only one day,
can get you.

Finally any HET exec worth his salt should know offers are based on
"rewarding future play", rather than past play. This is Gary
Lovemanspeak for savvily realizing the more you play at a certain
property, the less they have to give you. You want great offers from
Harrahs? Make a play, and take eight months off after that.

I'm sorry to hear about your less than satisfactory experience at
Harrah's Christmas Shopping event.

It's unfortunate that so many unknowledgeable gamblers continue to
patronize them heavily. They certainly won't miss the 6,000 of us.
if we should stay away.

The HET philosophy is much like that of Landry and the GN. When,
after the recent pillage of the GN VP, a suit was asked,
"Are you actively trying to get rid of all VP players"?, the ominous
response was, "Not ALL of them!"

I'm wondering, now that Harrah's is being sold, whether things are
more likely to get better, or....gasp..... even worse.

Thanks for sharing the story. Here's what I think he was nicely trying to say, "STAY UNDER THE RADAR." Since you're willing to play high limits, play $15-$20k when you go in to redeem an offer. At $300 per hand, you're only talking about 50-67 hands, which should only take a few minutes. That would keep them happy enough.

Put differently, you should bear in mind the old saying, "Don't try to teach a pig to sing. It doesn't work, and it annoys the pig." Translation - you were annoying the pig, and you should know better.

We keep hearing stories about teams that scorch plays and people who out plays (either intentionally or unintentionally). To me, all these stories have the same moral -- STAY UNDER THE RADAR.

AP shouldn't just mean knowing which buttons to push (or not push) on a machine. True AP should extend to knowing which buttons to avoid pushing with casino staff or slot club programs.

Enough of my rant; I hope everyone gets my point. Now, back to your regularly scheduled posting...
