I enjoy this site very much. I am planning a trip to Vegas sometime
in February and would like to stay either at the Hard Rock or Palms.
I have several questions about comparing and the two properties.
First, does one have an overall better selection of full pay than the
other or are they pretty much equal? As for promotions, is one
generally easier for comps? In terms of transportation, I'm aware
that both have shuttles but which has other properties within easy
walkng distance (and what are they? Moreover, I have read various
reports(on other sites) of people being unhappy with their stay at
the Hard Rock due to poor service, slow check in, etc. I think I've
asked everything that I would like. My trip will probably be mid week
as to find more reasonable room rates and less crowds. Any imput is

Have stayed & played at both. I am biased toward the Hard Rock.
For out-of-towners, I believe HR is better. For locals I believe Palms may be
better (I'll let the locals weigh in here).
Palms has better VP, HR has better cashback 0.5% vs Palms 0% (not considering
bounceback mailings which can be all over the map depending on phase of moon).
Both HR & Palms have great nighttime view of Strip, great attendance from
local young crowd who like to party & are great eye candy with
barely-hanging-on outfits.
As for poor service, I haven't experienced it at HR but I have been at VIP
when a lot of young deadbeats try to get everything comped after running up
$1000 tabs after losing $2000 on a one-night stay. Naturally they get turned
down. Imagine the same thing happens at the Palms. Generally, I have been
very satisfied with HR.
As for comps, I believe both are tough. HR is tough but has good mailings
which rewards frequent play. (Recently received one for 2 nights, $75 play,
$75 food.) Palms is tough (believes it requires more play for same benefits),
mysterious (to me) but has very frequent mailing & email promotions.
I'm not good at hustling or cadging comps beyond what I've earned so I play
what they say to play or go elsewhere to eat. At HR, I understand the levels:
$5K = Casino Rate
$10K = Room Comp
$20K = RFL
$40K = RFB
At Palms after $55K of play over 2 days using a 2-day free stay offer & only
one inexpensive meal for 2 on the bill could not get any part of airfare
($300) comped. In a similar situation, HR did take care of airfare, although
airfare was less.
In any case, the Palms stay was about 7 months ago & have not stayed there
since. HR is a system that is not a mystery to me & it's a warm fuzzy so I'm
staying with HR.
As for casinos nearby, HR has Terrible's & Key Largo a short walk at the end
of their block on Paradise. Also within walking distance of HR is the
soon-to-be-opened (Jan) Tuscany which is about a 1/2 mi W on Flamingo from
Key Largo. Palms has Gold Coast & Rio across the street on Flamingo & the LVA
offices on the other side of the Rio. If you're a quarter player there are
good quarter plays at Key Largo & Terribles & also frequent multiple-point
promotions (at Terribles, get their coupon book first). Also Gold Coast
should be good for quarter players (I have never played there) but their
mailings are oriented towards locals.
In spite of my bias, whichever casino you choose, you can't go wrong as these
are two of the best that LV has to offer.
