Hard Rock vs. Palms

Hi everyone,

I enjoy this site very much. I am planning a trip to Vegas sometime
in February and would like to stay either at the Hard Rock or Palms.
I have several questions about comparing and the two properties.
First, does one have an overall better selection of full pay than the
other or are they pretty much equal? As for promotions, is one
generally easier for comps? In terms of transportation, I'm aware
that both have shuttles but which has other properties within easy
walkng distance (and what are they? Moreover, I have read various
reports(on other sites) of people being unhappy with their stay at
the Hard Rock due to poor service, slow check in, etc. I think I've
asked everything that I would like. My trip will probably be mid week
as to find more reasonable room rates and less crowds. Any imput is
welcomed. Thanks

Palms has far more full pay VP, especially 100%+, then HR. For more
details, check the VPFree Database. Palms is easy walking to Rio and
Gold Coast. HR is easy walking to Terrible's and Key Largo. Never
stayed at Palms. Have had good stays at HR in the past, but have not
stayed there in a couple of years. Not sure of relative ease of comps
between the two. Maybe someone else can help. Hope this helps.

Palms has full pay everything, including a FPDW desktop progressive.
Hardrock has two full pay DDB and two full pay Joker Pokers.

True. However, for an out of towner, we found that the Palms
was very easy to get discretionary comps from if you play $1
VP. My wife got a free room and limo pickup and dropoff
for an upcoming trip for one night's play last trip. They also
comped her room last trip.

The rooms are very nice, the food is good, they have a
live poker room, the ambiance is nice (and not too noisy),
and the air handling system means the place isn't smoky.

In addition, they have good VP, with the new voucher
payout system so you can take a quick break without
waiting for all the coins to drop. In addition, the hosts
seem eager to please.

For a local, it may not be the best place in town; but
for a visitor, it's not bad.

I've never been to the Palms, so I can't compare.
   Hard Rock also has several 10/7 DB and a few 9/6 JB in addition to that mentioned.
   I like their smaller atmosphere, love their music.
   Their Six-Pack of coupons is great, but you don't have to stay there to get it. They had a scratch-card promo when I was there in November, a card for each 4 of a kind. I got $5 free play out of one of mine.
   I stayed at the Hard Rock once. Really like the place, but construction did wake me up at 7 a.m., even though I wore earplugs to bed.

music they play all day, I'll never go back in there
and play again. Unless I wanted to get a headache in
a very short period of time. That music is way too
loud. How can you concentrate on trying to get that
Perfect VP play?

Their swimming pool area and what goes on there, that
they show on TV, is a totally different story. :slight_smile:

I'm a regular at the Hard Rock, and I agree with Elaine about the
music. But then, the music the Hard Rock plays is a mix of the rock
music I grew up listening to, and newer music that I still listen to.
ALso, besides decent cash back on points, they send vouchers for free
play every month.

We were recently at both places around the holidays and Hard Rock is better
in most ways other than the VP inventory.
Can't totally vouch for the food because we haven't eaten much at HR.

I forgot about the 10/7 DB at Hard Rock since I am not smart enough to play
that game at an optimum level. Palms has 4 Bally red Gamemakers with .50
10/7/80 DB and FPPE. Tons of .25 10/6 DB can be found throughout the
place. A 10-machine slant-top $1 10/7 five-way progressive and three $1 /
$2 10/7 DB are part of the inventory. There's a bank of quarter 15/8 LDs
between the slot club and food court which have been exceptionally good to
me. Some of the penny matrix and fifty-plays by the middle entrance have
9/6 jacks. Palms has Spin Poker with 9/6 jacks in $.25 and $.50, and $.25,
$1/$2 3/5 plays with 9/6 jacks and NSUD. There's a bank of quarter 20/7
KBJW (100.6%) next to a nickel KBJW short-pay Progressive. Palms has lots
of fast FPDW including a bank of ten desk top $.25 progressives just inside
the main entrance. There's another bank of $.25 FPDW uprights near the slot
club. If you want to take a break from VP, they always have a $5 crap table
going that often features first time (virgin) females shooters. You can
monitor the craps game from a bank of 4 .25 sequential royal ($12,500)
desktops offering 9/6 bonus deluxe, 9/6 jacks, and 9/7 Triple Double Bonus.
If you like the atmosphere and music at the Hard Rock, I don't think you
will be disappointed with the Palms. The standard rooms are nice and
feature very comfortable beds with down comforters and pillows. Don't get me
wrong, I like the Hard Rock. But I have come to like the Palms a lot more
since the FPDW disappeared from HR. I'll be in town for a week later this
month and will play mostly at the Palms & Gold Coast. I plan to stop in at
the HR to cash in on a recent mailing ($10 food, $10 slot/table play). By
the way, for those who like to stay on the strip , Casino Royale will send
two free nights (weekends included) for very little play. There aren't any
100%+ VP games but the coupons they provide monthly make some playable.
Last two times I played just over two hours(3x points) and got free room
offers after both trips. The rooms are nothing special but are clean and
offer a good center strip location. You must cash in your .25% Cash back
within 48 hours but your comps don't expire.

Gilbert-
   Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I LOVE the music in there. But I also got a front-row seat to Ozzfest (Heavy-metal music festival) this summer and was in absolute heaven. You'd probably rather sit in a dentist's chair than at Ozzfest. Fine with me, that's less competition when the Ozzfest tickets go on sale.
   I love the Hard Rock, and usually do pretty well there. But if their VP is downgraded, they won't be seeing much more of me.

Elaine,

oops! I didn't mean to say "I don't like their kind of
music". It was that very loud (noise level) that gave
me a headache just from playing in there for about an
hour or so. That small atmosphere coupled with those
low ceilings must be the reason why. I wouldn't want
to be wearing a hearing aid in 2 or 3 years from now.
:o) Maybe I should bring a walkman or something
similar next time, if ever I decide to visit them
again.

CNBC Squawk Box had a live remote at 5:00 (Vegas time) this morning from the
Palms. One of the points Mark made, was that an estimated 50% of the
visitors to Las Vegas play without using ANY strategy. Apparently, half of
the players just "wing it" on all the games, not just video poker. Of
course, this is great for the optimum strategy FPVP player. The casinos have
to make a nice profit for the good games to be available for the few, the
proud, the mathematically astute!
