Hi Gang:
Well, we did it, thanks to another royal and a late bailout from Hedy.
"It" was finishing in the black (including cashback) for 2008 and it was a
welcome change for the Vee's after a disastrous 2007 that saw us lose more
that year than we had the previous two years combined.
We spent three nights at Harrah's over New Year's (Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday) and the celebration got off to a rousing start when I hit yet another
royal Wednesday morning after breakfast. Playing 50-cent 9/6 DDB I held the
10-Q-A of hearts and filled in the K-J for a $2,000 hit. It was our 30th ...
and last ... royal of 2008 and our seventh 2G royal in the last nine weeks of
the year. It also was our 17th royal at Harrah's AC in 2008.
That, once again, was the good news, however. The bad was that much of the
profit for the trip went back into the machines rather quickly and we found
ourselves down around a hundred dollars for the year just as we were getting
changed to go to the David Alan Grier show and the party in the ballroom New
Year's Eve. I was ready to give up, but Hedy wasn't about to surrender.
"This is the year our grandson was born and we have to make it a positive
year gambling as well," she said.
So, off we went to the machines to try to get back into the black. Only one
machine was open on the 9/6 bank so Hedy sat down, put in a $100 bill and
began playing 50-cent 9/6 DDB. The show was at 7:30 and by 7:20 her bankroll had
dwindled to $22. Then, she held a pair of aces and, lo and behold, up popped
the other two (without a kicker) for a $400 hit. Yipeee!
We cashed out and went to the show and the party thrilled that we had turned
around the horrible trend of 2007. We didn't finish that much in the black,
only a couple of hundred dollars, but it was on the correct side of the
ledger ... finally!!
We also took advantage of a 9X promotion at Harrah's on New Year's Day,
putting through over 3,000 base points. Unfortunately, the first day of the New
Year started with a red number but it couldn't put a damper on our celebration.
David Alan Grier's show was pretty raunchy (a lot of folks walked out) and
we both think that Harrah's should re-think its NYE entertainment. The Seven
Stars crowd is mostly an older one and the humor of Brad Garrett (last year)
and David Alan Grier just doesn't fly with this age group. A knockout
entertainer (like Vanessa Williams) would probably be a better choice.
The party was OK, loud as usual, and the food (surf and turf) was decent.
Hedy and I didn't make it all the way as these two old fogies wound up watching
the ball drop in Times Square from our room.
We will be on a Caribbean cruise from Jan. 10 to the 18th, so we won't be
back in AC until Thursday-Friday, Jan. 22 and 23. We also just booked a
five-day junket to Laughlin out of Newark March 6-11.
We're keeping our fingers crossed that 2009 will be as good, and hopefully
better, than 2008.
Regards,
CoachVee & Hedy
