I always figured it was mechanical (clickers for counting) or electronic devices that were prohibited.

I sometimes use a click-counter when playing vp to count hands played, and when I forget to bring it I sometimes use a pocket calculator (+1, =, =, =, ...). I'm pretty obvious about it, I don't try to hide it. Only once (at Arizona Charlie's Boulder) have I been questioned about what was in my hand; they had no problem with the click-counter.
