Had to show cash out of pocket at airport security?

I had a real good 8 day trip. At x ray station, airport, security asked me to take "everything" out of my pockets. I said all metal & coins out. He sternly spoke, "I said everything." So I had to take
all my money out. Held my bank roll in hands above my head while they ran the machine
around my body in that booth type machine. Is this standard procedure?

Even in Vegas, i was uneasy flashing cash in the air at hundreds of people in eye shot. I play dollar vp.
I was even with my start up cash leaving Vegas. In Addition, I hit 2 Royals and my bank was somewhat
thick. My roll, by Vegas standards, was no big deal .

Last Vegas trip 2006. I did get lots of suggestions from group before trip. I'll post later on thoughts
on changes of 12 casinos since our last time out.

Cheers....Jeep

You don't have to show what's in your pockets, just take the stuff out of the pockets that you're going to be wearing through the x-ray machine or metal detector.

Get an envelope, put the cash in the envelope and seal it then carry it in your hand through the x-ray machine or metal detector.

Wear a denim jacket with button pockets, put the cash in the jacket pocket, button the pocket, take the jacket off and drop it in the bin that goes through the x-ray machine.

Mike
That's a great idea. Things have changed a lot since my last flight. In my dusty
memory, stories of BJ teams carrying large sums of cash have had problems with
large sums of cash being seized. They would divide cash up and each player would
carry so much. Who knows what some eager security person might do?

I have heard the machine can actually tell how much cash is in a roll. But I don't
know if that's possible? Just put it in an envelope.. I like it, a simple solution..

Thanks Mike..... Jeep

The "booth" is a millimeter wave scanner (think "microwave", just a longer wavelength ... it won't pop popcorn). The wave passes through clothing, but is reflected by skin as well as any solid objects in your clothing or otherwise on your person. The image is computer analyzed and those solid objects are flagged on the resultant image.

Like you, I was caught by surprise when returning from a winning NOLA trip upon first adoption of the scanners at MSY. I had well over $10k on my person and had already pushed my bag through for scanning. The operator had me fist the wad, readily visible with my arms stretched over my head, then poked at it with a pencil to satisfy the camera that their was nothing concealed within.

I found myself looking over my shoulder repeatedly until boarding

I now take pains to empty my pockets and place objects into my carry-on well in advance of joining the security line ... saves time for everyone, and lets me deal with cash with a modicum of greater privacy.

Depends on which machine they send you through. The one you just walk through and looks like a door way without a door, is a just a metal detector and you can leave non-metal stuff in your pockets. However if they have you go through the naked full body scanner (the one you have to go in and stand in and put your hands above your head), then this picks up anything you have in pockets, etc. and you have to empty everything out BEFORE you go through whether is metal or just a tissue.

All the news about people's cash being taken into custody. Years ago, we would go to AAA and get traveller checks.
Now we have a bank that has a branch almost everywhere..
