Gulfcoast Casinos coming ashore

They had no choice - I'm amazed the vote was as close as it was.

I must be missing something.. because the article mention that the
land-based casinos must 800 feet from where the river-based ones are.

Is that really going to change things? Or is that, because they will
be land-based, they have more options to grow/expand than being on barges?

No, I believe they are saying that they can come ashore 800 feet from where their COASTAL casinos were originally operating. This has no effect on the river-based casinos. We're talking about the casinos that have been obliterated by Hurricane Katrina. If they had been land-based they would have sustained MUCH less damage from the hurricane. If you look at some of the aerial photography, it is evident that the coastal casinos' hotels, which were land-based, were damaged much less than the casinos themselves, which had to be over water. The casinos were sitting ducks. Hurray for Mississippi finally loosening their restrictive Bible Belt!
