Greektown Detroit casino barrings
Thanks for the link to this article. I never ceased to be amazed at
the stupidity shown by casinos. I would bet that a good number of
the people tossed out were playing at a long term disadvantage. Some
of the quotes from the casino spokesman are priceless, such as "We
love winners...". Um, no you don't. Or how about "...this decision
preserves the maximum opportunity to win for our other 4.3 million
guests". So they are making money from 4.3 million people and losing
to 30 people and they are worried??? This provides further proof
that casinos can't stand the thought of even one single person
playing with an advantage over them. Blackjack players have been
putting up with this sh@# for years. I hope this isn't the start of
a trend in video poker.

I know this is far fetched, but to me this is one step from really
hurting this casino. Imagine if some group got together (us?) and
raised enough money for a full paged advertisement in this newspaper,
paraphrasing this article as your average "Joe" might see it - "Don't
play at this casino, they will kick you out if you are a winner". In
it, have a picture the innocent lady who was barred because she won
$10K. There is no question in my mind that this would do significant
damage in turning away customers. The damage would be far greater
than the dollars they would be saving by banning the 30 players.
Other casinos would then think twice before taking this kind of
action!

Oh, trust me. They've been clobbered plenty by the bad publicity
they have received in Detroit that they don't need any paid
advertising to emphasize it. Check out this story that aired on the

Casinos in Nevada have been banning customers since they have opened.
Blackjack players, video poker players, etc.
Sometimes for good reason, often for no reason.
There have been many articles on the subject. They CONTINUE to bar
those that they deem to be a threat.

I wouldn't be too worried about needing to publish an ad. Because
this is Detroit, where the casinos are looked at with distrust, and
the whole concept of "advantage play" and "barring" is new to the
area, this has been big news in Detroit, covered on all of the news
programs and many radio talk shows. People seem more than
sufficiently outraged. I think if anything, publishing a paid
advertisement calling for a boycott would be far less effective than
letting the media run its course for which this is sensational enough
to cover for free.

teams of pros would walk across the street, much less come from
Arizona.
All this is interesting for a couple of reasons:
1) Greektown is the one casino that was guaranteed a license based on
the proposal that was passed to allow Detroit casinos. Unlike MGM
Grand & Motor City, the casino mgmt experience is not one of the
major national gaming companies, but rather one of the Michigan
Indian tribes that runs a number of small casinos upstate and in the
U.P. Their benchmark for VP offerings is the total rubbish offered
at the tribal casinos, and they have no experience in Las Vegas or
elsewhere to convince them that VP shouldn't provide a high return.
2) However, when Greektown opened, it had the best VP by far (who
remembers the "mistake" bank of $.50 multi-games w/ FPDW & 17/10 LD??)
& great cash back (.667%). Greektown has systematically destroyed
pay tables & cut VP cash back over the past 1-1/2 years. So for them
to say they're trying to preserve good VP for the majority, they're
lying. Basically, someone came up with a great "culling" strategy to
improve the bottom line, even though they're now the worst VP
offering of the Detroit & Windsor casinos. Give that peanut-brain a
raise.

Here are most of the facts, as I remember them:
A team of approximately 10-12 pros from Laughlin/Las Vegas were at
Greektown in April 2002. At the time, Greektown had .33% cashback as
well as PE from the $1 to the $25 level. The also had a $1 jumbo
machine with a 5% progressive meter on the royal flush. The machine
had five different games and 5 seperate royal flush progressives.
The meter move 5% on each progressive, no matter which game you were
playing. The pros locked up the machine and hit their first royal
flush on the 8/5 JoB when it was at $19,000. They picked off any and
all of the royal flushes that become positive. While trying to hit
one progressive another one would become positive. This machine was
removed from the casino in May 2002.
At the same time Greektown had two promotions going at the same time.
The first promotion involved cash drawings 3 times a time for the
tickets you earned playing video poker and slots. The second
promotion involved a free trip to Paradise Island in the Bahamas for
the highest 50 slot club point earners during the month of April.
Needless to say the pros cleaned up and earned several free
trips to the Bahamas!!
