I honestly prefer freeplay over VISA giftcards. Usually the ones they give can't be used to pay utilities (Simon doesn't allow you to set up recurring payments on their cards, and if a transaction comes from a merchant that can be set up as recurring, Simon will decline the transaction even if it is a one-time charge). Also, after a year, you start getting fees deducted from the card. If you use it for buying gas and try to swipe at the pump, it sends a $75 hold on the card. So if you don't have at least $75 left on the card, it will just decline you at the pump (you can still walk in).
Personally, utilities and gas are my biggest expenses, so not being able to use the cards for that makes it hard for me to use them up before the year period of no fees ends (epecially if you are getting $4000 - $5000 in cards per offer). Plus there's the hassle of just keeping track of that many cards.
With freeplay, I consider it worth 100% because I will be playing a particular amount of coin-in anyway to maintain my ADT. If I am loading $5000 in freeplay instead of $5000 of my own money for play that I am already going to do, I find it worth face value and much more convenient than dealing with giftcards.
Of course, that's just the case for my specific situation...

The only problem was that as players went to receive their VISA cards they were told there weren't any. The casino offered the option of notifying by phone when the cards came in (thus requiring a second trip weeks later for pick up - no mail option). Or, no surprise(!), Harrahs was happy to immediately offer the same amount in slot credits.
