I play at the indian casinos when I can't get to Vegas and all of
their pay table are very short. My question is: Is it better to play
a high varience game like DDB at 8/5(96.79) or play jacks or better at
8/6(98.39) and have a chance to walk away a winner after 5-6 hours
playing single line? Assuming that we are not going to hit the royal
flush, to make up that 4-5% edge your are going to need to hit a big
hand. I know you'll never win at these games over term, but for these
4ooo hands I can never seem to hit enough quads to make up the edge
playing 8/6 jacks or better. I always make up the differance in 8/5
DDB if I hit any of the aces. How are you going to WIN? Be luckier at
jacks or better or hit one set of aces at DDB? Any Interesting short
pay ideas to overcome??

You didnt mention any comps or cash back and BB coupons. In the end
the EV is all that matters, so the simple answer is to only play
positive or near positive games or you will just be feeding the
machine. Of course you could get a RF each time you play and go home
a winner everytime, but that is not realistic. I recently had the
choice of playing a 101% JOB game or ACES Bonus at 100.5, I played the
JOB the most, but at times I got soooo booored that I had to go play
something else. Thank god I had a choice that was still positive, I
hope that I would not have played a minus game over 101% JOB, but
since I didnt have to make that choice we may never know. You have to
make your own choices, but the casinos are built on the math, not on
the 'very nice randomness' hits. The more anyone plays a minus game,
the more likely they will loose.

playing single line?
Do they offer a blackjack game at this casino? At best you are
contemplating giving up more than a 1.5% edge to the house. I would think
that you could find a BJ game and utilize a proper basic strategy and only
give up one third of that. Of course, if you are a VP junkie just looking
to compare evil versus more evil, as Roseanne Rosannadanna would say, never
mind.

Subject: [vpFREE] Got a Question--Wining at short pay
My question is: Is it better to play
a high varience game like DDB at 8/5(96.79) or play jacks or better at
8/6(98.39) and have a chance to walk away a winner >after 5-6 hours
As soon as I saw your question as I was going through the posts, I knew
what response you would get. Any time someone posts a question
involving less-than-positive games, some people feel the need to
lecture about this foolish behavior without even attempting to answer
the question.
Like you, I will sometimes make a decision to play a "bad" game for the
entertainment value, and I know that in the short-run, you're really
not that much worse off. If you are going to play for an hour or until
you lose you $50 or $100 or whatever, losing an extra coin on each full
house probably isn't going to make any difference (yes, I know that the
1 extra hand it may allow you to play could be the Royal, but odds are
it will be just be another crap hand anyway!).
So after getting my personal point of view out of the way, I will at
least attempt to answer your question. I think if your goal is to play
$50 or $100 or whatever the amount is, and you want to either hit some
goal (such as double your money) or go broke trying, you are probably
better off with the DDB game since you do have more chances for
a "jackpot". The tradeoff is that, if you don't get the quads, you
will lose your stake a lot quicker. Or if you have decided to play for
a specified period of time you're likely to lose (maybe a lot) more
money.
I'll let one of the math wizards quantify those statements if they are
so inclined.
By the way, I do something similar with my online casino bonuses. I
start with 9/6 JoB to see if I can play the bonus through the required
number of times so I can withdraw it. But if the balance is getting
low, I switch to a more volatile game (just under 99% return) since I
figure that meeting the requirement with $10 left is sort of
pointless. I either need a big win or I'll just lose the rest. The
smartest play would probably be to play a few $5 hands right away to
either win big & then try to play it off on quarters or just lose it
quick, but I would rather make it last a little while for the fun of it.
Good luck!

-Thank you for your response. I argee with Ralph and the other
people who think its stupid and I should save my money for others
plays, mainly Vegas Baby. Beleive me, I save my main gambling
bankroll for vegas. For the short time, 8- 10 hours a day, I'm
playing Vegas for the week I consider it "short term" full pay and I
have some of the same up and downs as short pay. Isn't 8000 hands a
day just a drop in the bucket for the overall EV of a given machine?
Yeh, I see the overalls even out as the week passes, and the extra
digit(s) $15-30 per hour is huge, but doesn't it take millions of to
hit the true EV. Let's get back to your response, I'd like to
agree. Playing DDB is better for me to try to win. I can make up
for alot of quads on JOB but hitting just one kicker hand in DDB and
have the edge short term. Sounds dumb but I like it. I like your
statement "for the fun of it". A strategy to see if it works is
fun, otherwise the "Indians" edge will eat at you and you'll get mad.
I guess I just wanted to fell good about my dumb strategy.
Good Luck
