Give the couple a break

I bet that the few posters that are bashing this couple for
continuing to play the progressive would have been the first players
battling to get on the couples machine if they had left before
hitting the royal!!! With the royal at $1700 how many other machines
in town were better then just staying where they were? At $1800? At
$1900? Staying and continuing to play a high ev opportunity was and
always will be a valid play, however I am not saying put your life
and reality on hold and play to the death til you hit the jackpot
hand on every machine you play. I know players that will quit a play
and go eat at the same time each day instead of play on. I know
players that will go to sleep at exactly the same time each night no
matter how good the machine. BUT since it was a couple they actually
had the ability to even keep a somewhat normal eating and sleeping
regime while still keeping the machine. If you have issues with the
couple putting thier whole life on hold for days and days thats
fine. But don't forget some professional teams will take over an
entire bank of machines if a progressive gets high enough and will
play til it is hit, hopefully for a profit (but not always).

Was this couple playing a positive expectation game???

This is obviously a forum and anything and everything should be
covered but posters making rude "negative" remarks about players
playing POSITIVE opportunities are standing on shaky ground.

I wanted to reply since I was one of the first (THE first?) to
strongly question their behavior. If you read my post, then you'll
find that we see eye-to-eye as far as the first portion of your post.
Our minds are pretty much on the same wavelength concerning the
second section. It's just that whereas I can see a professional team
running 6 hour shifts to nail down a $60+/hr. opportunity, it's hard
for me to imagine rational circumstances under which this couples'
intense play might be a reasonable "lifestyle" choice. Hey, though,
"whatever floats their boat", huh?

I'll own up to my calling them "whacked out" as being a bit rude. But
I don't think I stepped more than a toe or so over the line of
propriety. Frankly, were I the guy at the machine it certainly
wouldn't hurt if a friend were to make that observation directly to my
face to at least give me an opportunity to pause and consider my
actions.

But of course, I'm not a friend of theirs and what's more, given the
observation that the woman has since been back at progressive play,
they could well be getting a far greater charge out of chasing that
meter than I could ever imagine in my wildest dreams.

Maybe when I'm a little more wizened I'll keep my trap shut in a
situation like this. But for now, I hope you get that I'm not
mindlessly suggesting that they have to be out of their minds and that
usually I try to keep my criticism as constructive as feasible.

Looking back, only two of us (I think) have said anything negative,
and my complaint is not so much with the couple, as with others who
advise players, especially novice players, purely recreational
players, and/or players who have a limited bankroll, to "chase." I
won't presume to advise professional players how to practice money
management, but I think it's vital for everyone else.
