I made the original post and you have all provided enough
information to answer that question and more. It was interesting
how the Barbary Coast ended up as part of the problem and/or
question. Thanks to each of you, and all of the details, we now
have a very good picture of what to expect.
I think, after reading all the responses, they will keep their
current reservations at the Orleans and use their car. We (2
couples) will be in town from the 19th through the 22nd of this
month and rooms are available and inexpensive. They could switch
their reservations to the Gold Coast, if walking to the Rio was real
convenient, and even save a few bucks over The Orleans. I do know
they will want to go to the Rio or Harrah's a few times during the
trip. I assume they have the option to catch the shuttle from the
Rio to Harrah's when they wanted to visit that casino or other parts
of the strip. I have concluded, if it was my situation, the Gold
Coast to the Rio is reasonable.
I prefer to walk and often put myself in situations where that is
possible. Fortunately, I am still capable of walking distances and
believe it is good for my continued health. I take stairs rather
the elevators and park away from entrances in order to get in some
walking. I remember, many years ago, actually walking from downtown
to the south end of the strip. I think that was before Mandalay Bay
was built. In Laughlin, I have recently walked from Harrah's to the
Riverside and back just for fresh air and exercise --- I do take my
time and often go through casinos and use the river walk on the way
back.
As far as jaywalking: I believe one can be very patient and
certainly cross the six lanes of traffic between the GC and Rio
very safely. I guess one could also cross I-15 safely with enough
patience. I am not even suggesting that, but patience and care can
keep you from taking many risks. I know jaywalking is not legal, but
often do it discretely if convenient. I cannot imagine the need to
ever jaywalk across a freeway and would consider it a greater legal
risk.
Thanks,
Bob
