Not to demean Mr. Frome, but hasn't this already been done? It's like he's
trying to reinvent the wheel.

That echos my sentiment in reading the article. The article describes
the basics of an approach that's been taken to a far advanced level
with Winpoker, and in many respects to an even further extent by
Frugal VP.

On the other hand, I'm not prepared to entirely disregard the
potential of what he may eventually offer up. There's always room for
innovation (who would have anticipated the extensive features of Jim
Wolf's frugalvp effort?) and Elliot Frome may surprise us yet.

I chatted a bit with Elliot yesterday. I think he's well aware of the fact that since his father's efforts, it seems the spectrum's been filled. He appears to be going through a change-in-career that most of us experience, and right now is riding an anticipatory high. Although he and I are nearly 100% different in our approaches to the game, I'm always open to the potential of something new. You never know.....

I hope everyone will give me the same opportunity to display my
potential.

My first column was intended to be an introductory one. I was not
attempting to claim to have built something so entirely new.

My Dad and I had always felt it important to have our own version of
a VP Analyzer which would afford us the ability to tinker with it as
we saw fit, and one which would be available to us to modify as new
versions of VP came along.

At this point, I really have no plans to release the software to the
general public (such as WinPoker and Frugal VP), but of course,
things could change as time rolls on. Currently, the program is not
in end-user friendly format. It displays the overall payback and
displays the EV and frequency of every type of hand, but I have to
manually sort the EV's into proper sequence, etc...

Thank you for taking the time to read my column, and I always
welcome feedback. If there is particular topic of interest to you,
feel free to let me know.

Yawn. He was happy when his program ran in "only" 10 hours? I had
code on an ancient 286 processor that ran in less than 20 minutes.

My program takes less than 2 seconds to compute EV and strategy. Of
course, I have limitations -- I never finished support for wild cards, but
otherwise I can handle virtually any pay schedule.

Years ago I tried to break it gently to Lenny that his numbers had a few
problems, but he didn't want to hear about it. I'm glad to see that his son
seems to be more interested in exact solutions.

Welcome to our midst, Elliot. The Frome name holds a special place in these circles. Your father was indeed a great pioneer and a dear friend of mine as well. I call him the Grandfather of skilled VP - and I honored him in the VP chapter of "More Frugal Gambling" by using his great basic graphic, the 3-legged stool, to illustrate the three concepts every skilled VP needs to know.
