Hopefully Marissa or Jean will chime in on this but it is my
understanding that the IRS requires a contemporaneous (ie at the
time)diary. You can number crunch all you want at home by whatever means
you like but I think you have to maintain that written diary. The only
exception might be a Palm Pilot device in the casino but the jury's out
on their legality in a casino as they are an electronic device. I've
seen some people use them in casinos with WinPoker which is really
playing with fire.

This is correct. "Tax Help for the Frugal Gambler" will be out in January, probably toward the end of the month. In it I show samples from my logs, both the handwritten notes I take right after I quit each session - and then the one I put on my computer later.

You can see what this book covers and get a pre-pub discount by going to my website listed below.

Jean,
At the matter of fact we already ordered the book, however "More
Frugal Gambling" was available almost a year later than it was
promised and did not contain any promised tax related chapters so we
are not sure when and what to expect from "Tax Help for the Frugal
Gambler". Please don't get us wrong, but we just simply asked for
help from vpFREE group and were expecting it. We do have a trip-by-
trip log, but were looking for better electronic format.

Thanks

It's, always, a tough comment to enter, but how is gaming different
than building model Model-A's and selling them at Rainbow Stadium
Hawaii, Sat morns, or workin tips parking cars at the local Pro-Am
while Tiger collects a sum'd make the week's Lottery look small. If
you live, act and smell as a small business it requires no more
record of activity than in and out balances for any period of time
to satisfy the blood-thirstiest IRS local counsel, fegadabout audit.

I don't blame you for being a bit pessimistic about the pub date. I hate to promise anything after the delay with More Frugal Gambling - but I am fairly sure it will be out by the end of January at the latest. Marissa and I have had it in to Anthony for several weeks - and there is a minimum of work to get it out since it is in a report-type form, not a regular book. Printing it will only take a few days, not weeks. I will keep you all posted when I can be more firm on the pub date.

In the meantime, everyone is welcome, even encouraged to share with the list their formats, i.e. what columns they use, etc. The IRS doesn't give a format - so everyone can make up their own. So sharing information here is helpful.
