Gambling with an Edge July 28th

This will be my last show as co-host. Bob is on vacation, so I'll be flying solo.

I will have two guests:

1. Peter Liston an active progressive slot team owner from Australia that is essentially living my book down under. I'm very excited about this guest, as it will be the first time I've had a chance to interview someone in my direct branch of pro gambling that's not retired.

2. Dr. William McCown will be on to talk about his latest book which is a diagnosis and treatment guide for practitioners dealing with problem gambling across the county. His take on the third wave gambling and where it's taking us is different from I Nelson's Rose. The contrast should be illuminating.

I'll be opening the phone lines so people can call in with questions or just to say Hi/By to me. Unlike our show format in the past, I'll be taking callers for both guests.

I plan on ending on a high note ( E above high C).

Our Live Air-Time is: 7 PM Thursday nights on KLAV Talk-Radio 1230am In Las Vegas. You can listen live at: http://www.klav1230am.com/

To CALL in LIVE during the show the Numbers are:
(702) 731-1230 & 1-(866) 820-5528

I must have missed it.

This darn job gets in the way of my VPFree life.

Your last show as co-host?
Are you out and Bob taking over?
Is Bob out and you are going to do it from here on?
Are the two of you inviting a third person?

What's the haps?

Realty includes, but is not limited to the following statements.

It was my idea to do a radio show with a gambling in Las Vegas theme. though I was in favor of a broader topic base. I asked Bob if he'd like to co-host with me. It was never my intention to do the show for more than a year. A recent sharp decline in listener-ship has promoted the need for a format change. Bob and I discussed it and it makes more sense for me to leave, since I was the short-timer anyway.

Bob's life and a ongoing career are devoted to gambling with an edge (and I don't mean the show). Therefore he will carry on in my stead with a new co-host Richard Munchkin that has much broader gambling experience than I do. As bizarre as this comment might seem, Bob and I are too similar in disciplines (both VP pros). The inclusion of Richard should be a great move.

I had very different ideas on how to take the show national and pump up the ratings. Bob and I do disagree on what is and is not "gambling related". It would be silly for me to go to a lot of trouble and fight for what I believe only to end the show anyway in another six months.

Bob and I are now in total agreement on this new change and we are parting good friends. I may also do some guest appearances in the future. I wish him nothing but the best and I hope my fans out there will give the new co-host a chance.

I've been meaning to ask, how do you know the listener-ship has declined sharply? How do they measure that? Just curious.

I know this might be a stupid question, but do they have video poker in Australia like they do here? Are you saying he's an Australian pro, IN Australia? Are they IGT machines? And Bally's, etc?

Heh, maybe they're all machines made by Aristocrat. Aren't they an Australian company?

Current statistics put downloads as 85% of a shows total listener volume. I was able to track downloads from my site and estimate our total listeners. I also had to account for the fact that 64% of the downloads I was getting were just my funny show closes and not the actual show.

Does that answer your question?

Well, kinda.

But as for me, I haven't downloaded it for quite awhile. But that's because I make sure I'm home to listen to it live, even if it means I have to drive over the speed limit. Your show has been like a new toy under the Christmas tree for me.

We've discussed this on the show several times. All progressive slots are potentially playable, but they need to be evaluated on a machine by machine basis using frequency studies or other tricky techniques...and even then the casino can change them without any difference that's visible on the exterior.

Two seemingly identical slots in different casinos or even the same casino could have widely different returns.

It's very unsure and risky business.

Peter says he plays lots of slots in Australia.

More on your question. The hold of slots is typically greater than for VP, so it takes at least 1% MR to even have a chance to overcome the hold. Don't waste your time on progressive slots with less than 1% MR.

There are a few exceptions for slots that do not have the typical totally random progressive meters.

The money to be made playing slot progressives in Las Vegas is very little, but the action does look nice on your account and reduces the chances of a person being flagged as an AP. I would look at it as cover action, but don't plan on it paying your rent.

Oh! So does that mean the machines there aren't "gaffed" as they are at the indian casinos here in Arizona Rob?

I know you were asking a question of Rob, but I had a slight distinction that was relevant.

"Gaffed" is a term reserved for machines which report one thing but do another. Essentially, "Gaffed" means the casino is cheating.

As Indian casinos do not claim that their machines are completely random, dealing off a 52 card deck, they cannot ever be considered "gaffed" regardless of their non-randomness and lack of equiprobable card dealing.

Non-random, unfair, bad cricket, but not "gaffed". Or at least that's how the term is used in the circles I frequent.

Mule

I would much sooner trust the machines in Australia to be fair than to trust the ones at any of the Indian casinos here. Why? Because IGT told me of the similarities in regulations between Nv. & Australia, while my investigation into the fairness of the machines at Indian casinos here in Az. led to the tribes having the absolute last word over the state on everything about them. And it's not unlike what I found when I went to Connecticut for nearly a week to look into the same subject there. Even though documents identify the state as having an oversight authority, they simply sign off on what is presented to them. I summized this was to make the tax-collecting part of the compacts as hassle-free as possible.

Nothing is 100% of course, but it was enough to keep me from having any desire at all to risk my money at them. However, people who do play at Indian casinos and who want to continue playing at them will swear all day long that the machines are fair....for obvious reasons.

Omg, another Frank?

This is fascinating, and as usual I am looking forward to the show. By the way, I have previously resolved to do what Frank said about playing slots for cover. I swear it has made my bounceback better. At least I feel it has anyway. There are some machines by Konami that I look for. You probably know more about it than I do, way more. But I have a few ideas that seem to work for me. This is going to be a good show this week.
