6a. Re: Gambling Movie(s) - Let It Ride
Date: Mon Feb 4, 2008 2:22 am ((PST))I agree. There is a partcular scene in that movie when Dreyfuss has
bet it all on Fleet Dreams while sitting in the Jockey Club. Then
there is the race itself, where Richard's acting is truly priceless. I
can always remember the line "Did I win?......God likes me, he really,
really likes me".--- In vpFREE@yahoogroups.com, misscraps@... wrote:

One of my top five favorite movies, I'm sure.
I've used that "god really really likes me" line when I've hit in games such as poker, where my friends around me also know the movie.
Other great scenes / lines: when he's mistakenly nabbed by security and can't get his bet down on one race, but the horse he would have bet on loses -- "I didn't lose! I didn't lose!" he states incredulously. And when Jennifer Tilly, playing a bimbo, comes up behind him to proposition him, and puts her hands over his eyes saying "guess who", he replies "a football salesman?" -- and after her proposition, looks into the camera and says "I really am having a great day!".
And Teri Garr, clueless about his gambling, comes to the track and suggests that it would be OK just to watch the horses and not bet on them, is met with full-scale laughter - and later, she says, go ahead and gamble, I'm going to just stay home and become an alcoholic.
All the fun lines aside, while this one might be "more" upbeat, it certainly has points where it is NOT that upbeat -- many times showing the rooms full of degenerate and hopeless gamblers playing neg. EV games (the races, very hard to beat) with their last money.
