gambling loss deductions broadened under new tax law

Your insults about gamblers are insulting.

I would concede that some gamblers are scum, and maybe even more than average.

On the other hand, I have met and am close friends with a number of APs who are of high character and are generally solid individuals. Compared to the average moron on the street, who lives from paycheck to paycheck no matter how much money he or she earns, APs (at least ones who last more than a few months) are far more financially secure and responsible than this. While opportunities for an AP can fade, they are not likely to be laid off. Another thing going for most APs is that they are very intelligent and can probably make a transition to another field if their game or games are no longer profitable. In many cases, an AP’s “job” is more secure than a normal job. Look back at 2008 and consider how many people lost their jobs and how many APs lost their job.

As for letting a gambler marry your daughter…? You really are a neanderthal if you think you have any business trying to make that decision for your daughter. It is also quite telling that you restricted this to your daughter. Would it be OK for your son to marry a gambler? And if so, do you think daughters are just not capable of making intelligent choices even if they are not aligned with your ideas. I could understand a bit of healthy skepticism, but you probably ought to at least meet the person before deciding he (or she) is unworthy.

Rough day, Jim?

You should recognize NOTI’s tongue-in-cheek wit at play (I’d hate to hear what he has to say about accountants!)

An interesting note about playing 9/6 Jacks with a strategy that gives a return of zero for the royal flush. You will still hit royals but about half as often so it still represents about 1% of the payback. The frequency is 77,906 compared to 40,391 per regular strategy. You would be playing at 98.9763%. That means you would be giving up 0.57% payback. I could see myself using such a strategy if there was a lucrative enough promotion and I wanted to avoid the possibility of getting “over royaled.”
