I would appreciate some clarification from the experts
on a gambling budget. Using triple play 9/6 JorB for an
example. My understanding for the rule of thumb is 4x a
the royal. Does this mean 4x$1000 per 3 lines for $12,000?
Is the amount for one session and if not, for how long?
Is it the amount you need to return your full budget before
you go broke?
All thoughts welcome, Colin
Gambling Budget?
9/6 JB is negative expectation. You would need an infinite budget not to go
broke eventually unless you have sufficient slot benefits to make up for the
games' negative expectation. I've heard rules of thumb mentioned, but they
may be highly innacurate depending on game choice and return. Whether you
are looking for long term ROR help or a feel for a reasonable short term
trip stake, here are some links you should look at.

I have found that Dunbar's Video Poker Analyzer is an excellent way to establish bankroll
needs, session by session, or trip by trip, or whatever, for all sorts of playing scenarios.
In spite of my constantly recommending this piece of software, I am in no way connected
to Mr. Dunbar.

I'll give you a rough rule of thumb to work with in arriving at a trip
budget ... at a given denominations (let's say $.25), I find that my
loss exposure for any given hour of 3-play is approximately double
that of single play.
I'm assuming that my play on the 3-line speed is about 85% of my
single speed (e.g. 850 hph vs. 1000, or 600 hph vs. 700). Total
3-play coin-in per hour thus equals about 2.5x my single line.
What I find is that for a period of, say, 3 hours, If $400 would
reliably see me through $.25 single line play of a game, I can roughly
look to $800 to see me through 3 hours of 3-play with the same
confidence. Likewise, if I look to $600 to see me through 6 hours of
single line play, I allow $1200 for 6 hours of 3-play.
This is a rough approximation of relative loss exposure -- note that
it's stated on an "hour for hour" basis and not on equivalent coin-in
for each play. Adjust as needed for your own experience.
For what it's worth I'm not familar with a "4x royal" suggested
bankroll. It doesn't jive as a reliable measure in my experience for
any type of funding allowance -- as some type of longer term measure,
it would be necessary to know more about the play (cb, etc.)

Dunbar's VPA is a fine tool. However, at present, it doesn't evaluate
Colin's multiline play question. I think that's on the marquee as a
"coming attraction".

What I do, to use the Dunbar software for a multi-line game, is to
assume a single line equivalent.
Thus, if I am playing 5-line quarters 9/6 JOB, at $6.25 a pull, I
apply the Dunbar software as if I were playing single line 9/6 JOB at
the $1.25 level (i.e., the same $6.25 per pull). I fully realize that
this gives me a very conservative estimate, But, on the positive
side, I can be sure that I will never exceed my bankroll.

Frankly, uselessly conservative. It's my off the cuff guess that even
60% of that number is a relatively conservative allowance.
A multiline analyzer from Dunbar will be quite the treat (if I
understand correctly, Paymar may have something in the pipeline for us
as well).

bl, I've been meaning to ask, are you going to be coming to the family
reunion this year?
Seriously, your comments are very much appreciated, bl!

<smile> Perhaps useless to some, but others of us (maybe only I) are anally conservative.
When I am doing my VP "thing" I hate to run out of money. It is the old argument (and one
that I always apply when I fly)...I would rather me 1 hour early than 1 second late for
making my flight. It is amazing how well I know the Admiral's clubs around the world...
But, I agree, a multi-line version of Dunbar's would be GREAT!

Harry, much as I'd like it, it's not going to happen any time soon.
